DPP to hold primaries in Lilongwe, no automatic candidacy for former MP

The ruling democratic Progressive Party(DPP) has chosen to hold primary election to select its candidate in the soon to be held by election in Lilongwe . The move which has surprised many people will leave former DPP MP for the area Kondwani Namasasu fighting for reselection to represent the party again

The constituency fell vacant when the high court declared that a re run be help after evidence of irregularities in the previous general election held two years ago .According to DPP Director of elections and leader of government in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa, the party will conduct by elections to select a candidate saying Namasasu , who lost the seat after the court ruling is not the automatic candidate “ we will open up the contest for primaries so we can have a strong candidate” , said Nankhumwa.

The date for the primaries is yet to be announced.It is rumoured that DPP has earmarked former Ambassador to Japan , Major General Reuben Ngwenya , who was also a former lecturer at Mzuzu University to represent it in the by-elections
