Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has been laid to rest at the Fourways Memorial Park surrounded by her family and friends.The ex-wife of the country’s first black president Nelson Mandela died on April 2 aged 81.
South Africans gathered Saturday to bid farewell to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, an anti-apartheid icon hailed as the mother of a nation and a political force. The military procession carrying Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s casket arrived at the memorial park after travelling through a rain-soaked Soweto .
Among the other dignitaries who joined Joyce Banda in paying their last respect to Winnie , included Presidents of the Republic of Congo and Namibia, as well as civil rights leaders from around the world, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson. South Africas former president Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma were also in attendance
Current President Cyril Ramaphosa and Mandela’s daughter, Zenani Mandela-Dlamini, was among the speakers at the funeral. In his eulogy, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Madikizela-Mandela was “an African woman who — in her attitude, her words and her actions — defied the very premise of apartheid ideology and male superiority.”
An estimated 40,000 people packed Orlando Stadium in Soweto to celebrate the powerful figure. The Malawi government was represented at the ceremony by government minister of education Bright Msaka
