Malawi Queens star shooter Mwawi Kumwenda will miss the African Netball Championship and is a doubt for next year’s netball world cup after suffering a serious knee injury in Australia.
Mwawi suffered the injury on her left knee when she landed awkwardly while playing for her Australian club Melbourne Vixens on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by her club, the 28 year old is expected to undergo surgery this week and the healing process will take about 12 months.
Commenting on the development, Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) general secretary Carol Bapu said Mwawi’s injury is a big blow to the team.
“It’s a vey big blow to us. She is one of our big players. We are just hopeful that by the time we will be going to the 2019 Liverpool World Cup she will be fine.”
Malawi Queens are currently in camp preparing for the African Championship slated to take place in Zambia.
The team is expected to compete at the next year’s world cup alongside Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Africa and the hosts England.
