The opposition united democratic front has announced that it is putting structures in place to hold a convention in readiness for next year’s general elections. In the convention planned for mid this year, the party is due to organise itself and elect its presidential candidate.
The party convention committee will be chaired by Charles Kachikuwo who will be deputised by Mangochi South legislator, Lilian Patel. The venue, date and budget of the convention is yet to decided.
According to the document made available to 247 Mala
wi and signed by the partys Secretary General Kandi Padambo, all the positions in the party will be up for grabs
According to the statement it says “be informed that in pursuance of relevant articles of the UDF constitution and a resolution of the national executive committee (NEC), for a national conference [Convention] to be held this year, 2018, it has pleased, the president, Right Honourable Atupele Muluzi, subject to ratification by the NEC, to approve the composition of the national conference organising committee.”
UDF has suffered a slow death since the party joined the governing alliance with the ruling DPP. Other critics have pointed out that Party president Atupele Muluzi has failed to sell the vision of the party and has left the party in a state where its identity has vanished . Research has shown that there is growing calls among the grassroots for Parliamentarian and party member Lucius Banda to challenge Atupele for the president.
Banda himself has not shown any interest to challenge the current leader although he has been at odds with the party hierarchy over the voting on keys issues in parliament. It is not known yet whether UDF will go it alone or fight the general elections as part of the alliance with the ruling DPP
