Corruption scandal rocks Malawi: CEDWAT demands justice

By Burnett Munthali

The Centre for Democracy Watch (CEDWAT), a human rights organization, has expressed grave concern over ongoing allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement in the previous government.

CEDWAT notes with great concern the reports of looting of funds meant for development projects and social welfare, particularly the ‘sadaka’ at MBC and the Greenbelt Authority, which were meant for hunger eradication.

The organization strongly condemns the total silence of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) on these glaring cases of corruption, questioning whether HRDC is selective in its advocacy.

The people of Malawi demand answers, and CEDWAT joins the call for accountability and justice, emphasizing that the looted funds belong to the people, not politicians.

It is imperative that those responsible are brought to book, and CEDWAT demands investigation and prosecution of corruption cases, recovery of looted assets, strengthening of anti-corruption institutions, immediate freezing of MBC bank accounts and assets of suspects.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau must speed up investigations and prosecutions, and CEDWAT urges all Malawians to rise up and demand accountability from their leaders, standing together against corruption and fighting for a better Malawi.

CEDWAT appeals to the public to march together, petition, and make their voices heard, demanding justice, transparency, and accountability, emphasizing that enough is enough, and it is time to protect Malawi’s resources for the benefit of all citizens.

The organization believes that united, Malawians can bring about change and ensure that their country is governed with transparency and accountability.
