Malawi’s innovation ranking takes a hit

By Dean Chisambo

Malawi ranks 152nd in the Global Innovation Index, according to the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST). NCST Director General Gift Kadzamira attributes this to a lack of coordination among innovators, leading to duplicated efforts and wasted resources.

Kadzamira emphasized the need for collaboration, citing Malawi’s potential in areas like agriculture, ICT, and energy. “We’re not doing badly, but we can do better,” she said, highlighting NCST’s efforts to fund grassroots innovators and support institutions driving innovation.

Kadzamira – we need collaboration

TEVETA’s Sara Zgambo echoed the importance of coordination, noting their work with rural innovators and collaborations with MUST. The stakeholders’ conference aims to bridge gaps, share ideas, and boost progress in Malawi’s innovation sector.
