Kasungu Police Station reports slight decrease in crime rate

Kasungu Police Station has reported a slight decrease in the overall crime rate, with 563 cases recorded from January to June 2024, compared to 566 cases during the same period in 2023.

However, road accidents have increased from 53 in 2023 to 66 in 2024.

At the Station Executive Committee meeting held on July 20, 2024, Deputy Commissioner of Police Obry Nyirenda attributed the success in crime reduction to effective policing strategies and strong community relations.

He cautioned officers against corruption, emphasizing that those caught engaging in corrupt practices would face legal consequences.

Nyirenda also announced plans to install CCTV cameras in the central business areas of Kasungu to enhance security.

On his part, Chairman of the Kasungu Station Executive Committee for the urban area Isaac Daka, praised the joint efforts between the police and community policing forums.

During the meeting, monetary prizes and equipment were awarded to high-performing Community Policing forums and police units.

Kasungu Police Station oversees 17 police units and collaborates with 44 Community Policing forums, comprising 35 in rural areas and nine in the municipality.

Judicial vigilance key in combating financial crimes- Kapindu

Judge-In-Charge of the Financial Crimes Courts Division, Redson Kapindu, has emphasized the need for judicial officers to be vigilant and proactive in handling financial crimes that come before them.

He made this appeal on Monday during a training session on financial crimes, conducted by the Judiciary with support from the Basel Institute on Governance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating financial crimes and asset recovery.

“It is crucial that judicial officers and legal practitioners remain vigilant, informed, and skillful as they navigate the complex legal landscape of financial crimes,” said Kapindu .

“Their role is critical in ensuring that justice is served and that those who engage in financial malfeasance are held accountable,” he added.

On her part,Team Leader at the Basel Institute, Carolyne Lamptey, echoed Judge Kapindu’s sentiments, noting that courts play a vital role in dealing with financial crimes.

“This training is essential in equipping legal practitioners with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively handle financial crime cases,” she said.

The training session brought together legal practitioners from government departments and agencies in Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu, underscoring the collaborative effort to combat financial crimes in Malawi.

Times Radio listeners donate to children with disabilities

A dedicated group of Times Radio listeners, led by the Mayi Wamakono program,on Monday donated assorted items to support children with disabilities at Chikamveka Primary School in Matawale, Zomba.

In an interview with journalists,Chairperson of the group Chrissie Baluwa explained that they came together to pool their resources and make a meaningful impact on the education of these children.

“We have collectively raised over K250,000, which we used to purchase essential items like flour, soap, salt, and soya pieces. We are also grateful to DAPP for their kind donation of clothing,” Baluwa said.

In an inspiring address, Times Radio presenter Fungai Mutsinze urged the learners to strive for excellence, emphasizing that their hard work and determination can significantly contribute to their personal growth and national development.

Headteacher of the school, Eunice Thewe expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation, highlighting the school’s ongoing challenges, including a shortage of wheelchairs, pit latrines, and learning materials.

The charitable initiative was part of Times Radio’s 9th birthday anniversary celebrations.

Youth-led organizations encouraged to take charge of their development

The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCM) has urged youth-led organizations in the country to take a proactive approach towards sustainable development by establishing their own enterprises.

Speaking during a meeting with Youth Response for Social Change (YRSC) at Nayuchi in Machinga district on Tuesday, NYCM Executive Director(ED) Rex Chapota stressed the importance of self-sufficiency, citing the challenges posed by donor fatigue.

He emphasized that self-reliance is crucial for the long-term viability of youth-led initiatives.

Chapota assured the youth that the government is committed to their development, highlighting a significant increase in youth funds to 2.7 billion kwacha, a 600% rise from the previous five years.

On her part, Programs Manager for YRSC,Prisca Inani, expressed her organization’s commitment to fully utilizing the opportunities offered by the Council and contributing towards Malawi’s 2063 agenda.

“Our organization is well prepared to bring change in our communities,” she said.

YRSC is currently implementing a four-year project, Social Transformation for Ending Child Marriages in Machinga district, funded by USAID, which has already nullified 193 child marriages.

Pikho Farms unveils Kingstons as brand ambassadors for Community Empowerment Project

Pikho Farms in Lilongwe on Tuesday unveiled Zeze and Dorothy Kingston as brand ambassadors for its community empowerment project, which is being implemented in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation scholarship program and the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Pikho Farms Chief Executive Officer(CEO), Pilirani Khoza, a beneficiary of the Mastercard Foundation scholarship program, stated that the Kingstons will not only promote the Mastercard Foundation but also encourage more people to venture into seedling production.

“It is unfortunate that many people are unaware of these valuable opportunities. I am confident that the Kingstons’ involvement will raise awareness about the scholarships and my farm,” said Khoza.

The Kingstons expressed gratitude to Pikho Farms for the partnership, pledging to work diligently to achieve the desired results.

Khoza, a 2022 graduate of the University of Pretoria with a master’s degree in forestry and environmental studies, courtesy of the Mastercard scholarship program, is eager to give back to the community through this initiative.
