SADC leaders meet online to find solutions for Madagascar’s Crisis

JOHANNESBURG-On 17 December 2025, leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened virtually to address the ongoing political turmoil and security challenges in Madagascar.

Chairing the summit from South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed delegates and highlighted the urgent need for coordinated regional action to restore stability in Madagascar.

He referenced a previous meeting held on 16 October, emphasizing that the conclusions and recommendations from that session continue to guide today’s deliberations.

President Ramaphosa also pointed to broader regional concerns, including instability in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and stressed the importance of unity and collaboration among SADC member states.

The summit included discussions on electing an interim SADC chair to guide the organization’s next steps. President Ramaphosa concluded with optimism that the meeting would produce practical solutions to stabilize Madagascar and strengthen regional cooperation.
