Jumah flashbacks Chakwera on Activists Treatment

By Vincent Gunde

President of Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) Bantu Saunders Jumah, has reminded President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to match with what he wrote on his 2018 facebook page on activists Bon Kalindo and the torture he and his MCP are doing on him.

Jumah said there was a time when the DPP was harassing and oppressing Bon Kalindo when he was Member of Parliament and today the same is being tortured and harassed by Chakwera’s MCP government.

He has asked President Chakwera to clarify his sincerity with his writing in 2018 that he will protect activists once he is voted into the government claiming that Kalindo is being moved from one court to another and a police station to another.

Speaking through his face book page widely read by millions of followers across the African continent, Jumah said it is very sad thar President Chakwera is doing exactly what the DPP and former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika was doing treating Kalindo as if he is a gangster or rebel.

Jumah has deplored President Chakwera and his MCP for personal punishments being perpetuated on activist Bon Kalindo describing what is happening to Kalindo as total dictatorship happening in a country of democracy.

He lamented that Kalindo just like everyone else has the right to go to court and justice observing that the court grant him bail, the police is coming to rearrest him and keeping him for more than 48 hours saying Kalindo is not a threat to national security.

The MRP President said Kalindo is being undemocratically held in custody at Mangochi prison demanding the democratic principles and free rule of law in Malawi to release him unconditionally as he has been held more than 48 hours without being taken to court.

He said President Chakwera and his MCP led Tonse Alliance government should borrow a leaf from what happened in 2019-2020 electoral justice in court where millions of property was destroyed and vandalized, Timothy Pagonachi Mtambo was not held accountable and why this time the same has happened, Bon Kalindo is paying the price.
“I plead with you Mr. President, you have over-arrested and over-held Kalindo, release him forthwith without any condition attached,” said Jumah.

He has since advised President Chakwera that there is no permanency in politics, presidency and ministerial position observing that today Chakwera is President, three years ago, there was Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and nobody knows who will be the President of the Republic in 2025.

Jumah has also advised President Chakwera to leave a legacy that will be remembered by the future generations to come and not the legacy of destruction, torturing and harassing activists reminding him that he once wrote on his face book page in 2018 that… “If people vote for us next Tuesday, they are going to see change which they have not seen before,”……

He said it is sad that instead of Malawians see change as promised by President Chakwera while in the opposition party , Malawians are in pain and suffering and they are regretting to have made a wrong choice of a leader.

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has encouraged Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to collectively assess and determine the programs that have a demonstrable impact on achieving the country’s development goals.

Dr. Chakwera said as Head of Government, he needs NGOs and CSOs that are credible and strong to hold those in public office accountable wondering how can public officers be held accountable by organizations that are not themselves accountable.

He said a more accountable NGO Sector is good for the creation of a more accountable Government saying he has been informed that Government is not properly accounting for foreign currency received through NGOs resulting in the country losing much-needed forex.

Speaking during an NGO Day held at BICC in Lilongwe on Thursday, President Chakwera has directed the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Gender to jointly engage Non=Governmental Organization Regulatory Authority (NGORA) to ensure that all forex received in the NGO Sector comes through regulated systems.

President Chakwera said Government must have the rule of law as its modus operandi if it is going to make any progress on its development goals thanking all NGOs who are exemplary that they are NGOs Malawians need to prosper together.

He also thanked NGOs that are delivering clear outcomes, constructing schools, hospitals, homes for the vulnerable and educating the masses in line with the country’s human capitalization agenda saying these exemplary NGOs are critical to setting the pace in how to partner and collaborate with Government to bring tangible transformation to Malawians.

The President said he has been inspired by the partnership between Government, NGOs, and Development Partners in serving the most vulnerable Malawians observing that this partnership has saved thousands of lives this year.
“Cholera in every district and Cyclone Freddy across the southern region, partnership has really worked,” said Dr. Chakwera.

He called on Development Partners to join the Malawi Government in supporting that work, assuring them that he is fully committed to measures that strengthen and expand the civic space, appealing to the NGO Sector that when they have concerns about Government policy, they should raise the specific concerns for Government to address them.

According to the NGO Sector report, Malawi has a total of 941 registered NGOs , of which 78 percent are local and 12 percent are international while 40 NGOs have closed their operations in the past year due to lack of funding.-

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says the resumption of direct budget support by the World Bank signifies the return of investor confidence in the government of Malawi, 10 years after the group suspended its direct budget support to Malawi.

Dr Chakwera said this today at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, where he presided over the signing of a US $137 million budgetary support agreement between World Bank and Malawi government, with US $80million set for immediate release.

He said the support will aid Malawi in its quest to recover from economic shocks which emanated from Tropical Cyclone Freddy, Cholera outbreak, drought experienced in some parts of Malawi, not forgetting effects of Tropical Storms Anna and Gombe, as well as COVID 19.

The Malawi leader said the continuous engagement between Malawi and the World Bank has now yielded fruits, and Malawi will continue working together with the World Bank as the country has put an extra gear towards economic recovery, through the capitalisation of agriculture, tourism and mining sectors ( ATM strategy).

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda said the signing of the agreement signifies the World Bank’s confidence and trust in the leadership of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera as well as reforms taken by Malawi government towards the country’s economic recovery and growth.

Chithyola Banda said Malawi will work tirelessly towards the country’s economic growth.

World Bank Country Director for Malawi Nathan Belete said Malawi won the budgetary support following necessary reforms which the country undertook to turn around it’s economy.

He said the World Bank remains committed to assisting Malawi through financial support and technical advice as the country moves out of the poverty trap and registers recovery and growth.

He said Malawi has great human resource and potential to attain it’s economic recovery and growth aspirations.

He announced that by the end of 2023, World Bank will have made new financial commitments totaling US $850, where US $240 million will go towards cyclone Freddy response and climate resilience, and will be approved next week.
