DPP NGC member Ken Msonda defends President Chakwera’s approach to corruption fight

A senior National Governing Council (NGC) member of the Democratic Progress Party (DPP), Ken Msonda, says Malawians should stop blaming President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for delayed justice in corruption cases, arguing the Office of the Republican President does not mandate him to dispense justice in criminal or miscellaneous cases.

Msonda, who is also the Executive Director of the Independent Political and Good Governance Analysts Think Tank (IPSATT), advised Malawians to direct their anger to law enforcement agencies such as the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Attorney General (AG), Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the judiciary when cases are dragging in courts.

Speaking in an interview what he expects from Chakwera as he addresses the nation this even, Msonda differed with majority of Malawians who expect President Chakwera to dismiss and punish senior government officials named or implicated in the Sattar corruption scandal.

He argued that having taken the Oath of Office to do discharge his duties as guided by the Republication Constitution, the President is not supposed to act with emotions on matters of national interest.

“Malawians, the donor and bilateral community partners should not expect President Chakwera to tackle the Sattar-corruption report saga during his address to the nation today, Tuesday the 21st June, 2022, evening. Our take as Independent Political and Good Governance Analysts Think Tank is that the State President cannot act on emotions, frustrations, disgruntlement and anger the citizenry have to have the case expedited,” he said.

The IPSATT boss further observed that President Chakwera “has demonstrated political will, but is gagged by the law as enshrined in the Malawi Constitution.”

Msonda said the biggest and major obstacle delaying the Sattar case is “the tactical – deliberate – unnecessary delay by the offices of Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecutions to give consent to ACB to start the case.

“A trillion dollar question is why the delay? Malawians are tempted to believe and speculations are very high in our midst that the two office of the Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecution possibly know something Malawians don’t know; hence, its reluctance to give consent to the Director General of ACB Martha Chizuma,” he said.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it remains committed in creating a conducive environment for the youths to attain economic independence and contribute to the country’s development agenda.

This follows a successful completion of a 10 day training of 20 MCP youths in screen printing at Blantyre Teachers Training College under the youth empowerment and skills development campaign.

The campaign was launched on 6th June 2022 by MCP Secretary General.

Making his statement at the end of the training on Monday, Blessings Chilembwe, who represented MCP Secretary General, said it is exciting to witness the start of the fulfilment of the party’s dreams on job and wealth creation for the youth in Malawi.

“It is the party’s interest to ensure that every youth in Malawi contributes to the social economic development of the country. It is against this conviction that the party launched this initiative to help the youth gain necessary and relevant skills to make them self-reliant and economically independent so as to help the development of this country,” he said.

The initiative is being done in partnership with METI University and according to Chilembwe, about 5,000 youths will be trained in different set skills.

“As a party we believe that this is a big job to do and it requires partnership. As a result, the MCP is proud to be associated with METI University.Through this partnership, i know that more than 5,000 youths(as stated by the SG) in Malawi will be trained and i am pleased to note that this training has proved that our journey in skills development, youth empowerment, job and wealth creation and social economic development of this country in general is assured through our partnership with you,” he added.

Dr Harlex Kanthiti, the Vice Chancellor of METI University, has since made an assurance that METI is ready to not only provide trainings but also enter into long term partnership with the party to provide other development trainings as well.

“Let me take this opportunity to assure the government of Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera that METI University remains relentless in supporting the government to realize the Malawi 2063 Vision aspirations,” said Kanthiti.

Donors show confidence on Chakwera …World Bank funds the restoration of Kapichira Hydropower

There has been a windfall of donor inflow into the country to finance different projects, a sign that different development partners now have confidence on President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s administration.

Barely a week after the European Investment Bank nodded the release of funds to the tune of €117 million for the M1 road project from Kamuzu International Airport roundabout to Chiweta, the International Development Association (IDA) an affiliate of the World Bank Group approved credit fund amounting to US$36 million and a grant of US$24 million for the rehabilitation of Kapichira Hydropower.

According to a letter dated 17 June 2022 addressed to the Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor, the IDA says the funds have been sanctioned as the emergency power restoration assistance seeking to rehabilitate the power plant and transmission infrastructure damaged by the Tropical Storm Ana in July this year.
“The objective of the project is to increase resilience of the Kapichira hydropower dam and spillway, and transmission and distribution damaged by Tropical Storm Ana in January 2022,” reads part of the letter.

It is expected that the injection of the funds towards the project will go a long way in easing the problem of blackout the country has been experiencing due to the damage caused by the storms that hit the country early this year.

Tropical Storm Ana resulted in severe flooding which caused extensive damage to the 129.6 Megawatts Kapichira Hydroelectric Power Plant putting the plant out of operation and affected the supply and distribution of electricity in the country.
