Chakwera describes Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) a pacesetter

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has described Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) as a game – changing pacesetter university.

Chakwera made the remarks on Friday 11th August, 2023 at MUST Campus in Thyolo when he conferred academic accolades to 410 students.

The graduates represent various fields including Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Information Technology, Earth Science, Meteorology, Medical Microbiology, and many more.



Speaking at the event, the Malawi leader said in slightly over ten years, MUST has grown into a unique future – shaping centre of academic research and innovation with trailblazing capacity in progressive disciplines that resonate well with local and global development demands.

He emphasized the importance of higher education for the country’s development and the achievement of Malawi’s Agenda 2063.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the students, faculty, and staff at the institution in shaping the future of the country.

“As for you who are graduating today, given the educational privileges now at your disposal, it should go without saying that your status as a graduate places in your path endless opportunities and on your shoulders great responsibilities. You have the opportunity and responsibility to embrace learning as a way of life,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Professor Address Malata, the Vice Chancellor of the University, thanked the president for gracing the occasion in his capacity as chancellor.

She implored the graduates to continue working hard and to uphold the values of MUST, which include commitment, professionalism, entrepreneurship, and integrity.

Malata also assured the president that MUST has positioned itself as a solution – based institution focused on contributing to the thriving of the country in line with Agenda 2063.

The 4th congregation at MUST was a momentous event, with notable dignitaries in attendance, including the Minister of Education, Honorable Madalitso Kambauwa, Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka, and other university officials.

Ken Kandodo invites teachers on tour of parliament

Member of Parliament(MP) for Kasungu central Ken Kandodo on Thursday invited teachers from his Constituency and other Constituencies in Kasungu district in order to allow them see how MPs do their work in parliament.

In his sentiment, Kandodo said teachers are the ones that are responsible for grooming the young men and women in all the Constituencies of Kasungu district.

He said:” we hope they must have an idea of how we do our work and they will be able to inform and train the young ones as they are going through of their education system to make them aware of their responsibilities as citizens of this country.

” But also I am here as well as mamber of parliament because I was elected and am here to represent them, so I think it is normal in once a while I must get people in my home to come and see the work that I do here and to see the importance of parliament in our country.”

Kandodo added that the people were very happy because they have seen what they did not know about the things that are happen in Parliament hence they have witnessed the parliamentary debate.

On her remarks, payer of primary education advisor from Lisasadzi zone in Kasungu Alice Songe said the Parliament is good because the parliamentarians are very serious as they discuss things which are very important to the country.

She said:” we appreciate what is happening here because we just see from the television when we are watching, but today we have really witnessed what is happening here.”

According to one of the political analysts at University of Malawi Mustapha Hussein, bringing the people from the Constituencies to Parliament is one of the way of promoting political development in the country hence people can have an idea of what really happens in Parliament.

Among the people who were invited to witness the Parliament session include headteachers and payers from the Kasungu central Constituency, Kasungu west Constituency and Kasungu south respectively.

Businessman on the run, police raises Interpol alert

A Blantyre-based businessman Shabir Jussab, 32, is reportedly on the run in Saudi Arabia on alleged offences of cyber harassment.

This has compelled Malawi Police Service (MPS) to obtain a warrant of arrest from a Magistrate Court in Blantyre against Jussab, South West Region Police Headquarters spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa has confirmed.

Mikuwa said Interpol is on alert, and upon his arrest, he would be brought home to answer the charges.

Jussab, according to the warrant of arrest, is accused of violating section 86(b) of the Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security Act.

The warrant states that Jussab, between July and August 2023, in Blantyre, used his computer system to send out messages that threatened to inflict injury to Abdul Karim Batatawala and some members of his family

Jussab, ironically, is Batatawala’s son in-law. He is married to Batatawala’s daughter, who is still in Malawi, according to our police sources.

Further, in the second count, he stands charged of willfully and repeatedly using WhatsApp messages to disturb or attempt to disturb the peace, quietness or right to privacy of Batatawala and his family members.

Police is accusing Jussab in the third count of cyber stalking. It is alleged that he harassed and threatened Batatawala and members of his family through WhatsApp to instill fear in them.

The court directed police to arrest Jussab and to produce him before the court in execution of the warrant.

The police sources say Jussab has been sending insulting and threatening messages to Batatawala, allegedly making unfounded messages against him, while posting the same on social media platforms, including Facebook.

Malawi Law Society punishes Lawyer Ayuba James for swindling a client

The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has recommended to the office of the Chief Justice to disbar its member Ayuba James of CJ Attorneys for allegedly swindling a client millions of Malawi Kwacha.

The prayer to the Chief Justice is contained in a statement released on 8 August, 2023.

“The Committee, therefore, resolved that: It should recommend to the Chief Justice that you be struck off the roll of legal practitioners in accordance with Section 96(1)\(a) of LELPA,” reads a disciplinary committee ruling from the Malawi Law Society.

The MLS disciplinary committee has also advised the office of public prosecution to start criminal proceedings against Mr James.

“It should advise the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to institute criminal proceedings
against you for embezzling client’s money in accordance with section 96(1)X(e) of the LELPA,” says the ruling.

As a matter of remedy, the committee ordered Ayuba James to refund K11,300,000.00 to Mr Gama as well as paying Two Hundred Forty Thousand Kwacha (K240,000.00) to the Malawi Law Society being costs of the disciplinary proceedings in accordance with Section 96(2)(a) of the LELPA.

The development follows summoning of Ayuba James for hearing in accordance with Rule 10 of the Disciplinary Committee Rules of Procedure 2015, to appear before the Disciplinary Committee, sitting at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe on 27th June, 2023.

The purpose of the Conduct Meeting was to inform him about the alleged misconduct that had resulted in the complaint and to ensure that he had a greater understanding of the consequences of his alleged actions.

According to the charge sheet, Ayuba was engaged by Mr Gama to represent him in a civil matter where he was sued by one of his suppliers.

Mr Gama alleges that he advised him to deposit K60,000,000.00 into his personal account while waiting for reconciliation with the supplier.

Mr Gama states that while he was waiting for the reconciliation, he withdrew K29,000,000.00 through him.

Mr Gama stated that after sometime, he was informed that there was a ruling from the courtband that he should pay the supplier K46,000,000.00. He was further told to write a cheque to Kawelo Lawyers, the supplier’s lawyers.

According to the statement, it was at this point that Mr Gama asked Ayuba, to deposit the balance to his bank account.

Mr Gama told the committee that Ayuba told him that he had made a mistake and deposited K11,000,000.00 to Kawelo Lawyers instead of his account.

“From the above account, it is alleged that you still had K20,000,000.00 from
K60,000,000.00 and this was meant for Nail Teck (K5,900,000.00), Aluminium
(K7,300,000.00) and the balance for himself, however, you did not pay them. He further alleges that he engaged you to represent him in court and due to your conduct
and failure to carry out instructions, a default judgment was entered against him,” read the ruling.

The charges according to the statement is failure to open a client account contrary to section 36(1) of the LELPA.

Second account is embezzling client’s money contrary to section 89(2)(m) of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act (LELPA).

“You engaged in personal or professional conduct that brought discredit to the profession contrary to Chapter 3 rule 1 of the Code of Ethics as well as engaging in misconduct that brought the profession of the law into disrepute contrary to Sections 89(2) of the LELPA?”

Lastly, MLS found Ayuba guilty of failing to timely respond to the Society’s communication dated 28h November, 2022 that contemplated a reply contrary to Chapter 3 rule 3 of the Code of Ethics.

Chakwera pays last respects to Late Goodall Gondwe

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, on Thursday paid his last respects for the fallen veteran politician-cum-seasoned economist, late Honourable Goodall Gondwe in Area 10 Lilongwe.

Upon his arrival, the seemingly grief-stricken President-in the company of the country’s First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera- was welcomed by senior cabinet ministers, traditional leaders and other senior party officials (both from Malawi Congress Party and Democratic Progressive Party),and immediately proceeded to join scores of mourners who have thronged the residence.

In his speech, the Malawi leader said:”We will fondly remember Hon Dr. Goodall Gondwe was a true patriot, who dedicated all his life to the socioeconomic transformation of Malawian communities through his service as an Economist and Politician.”

The president said Gondwe’s selfless contribution to the national cause will remain an indelible mark in history.

Gondwe, who served in various cabinet positions after working in multiple portfolios as an economist, both locally and internationally, died at the age of 87 on Tuesday after collapsing.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Adventist Hospital in the capital city.

He hailed from Kayiwononga Village at Enukweni in Mzimba District where he also once served as a Member of Parliament.
