Self Help Africa (SHA) which has 57 years combined experience of United Purpose (UP) in the country has assured the communities it works with in Dowa District that it will continue supporting them in accessing safe drinking water and use basic sanitation services.

The organization says it will support the communities to be able to sustain their forests, land and water sources whilst increasing income, health and diets as the programmes are designed with and for women and girls and address harmful gender norms.

Chifundo Mandala

WASH Project Manager for Dowa Chifundo Mandala said the 5 -year Strategy (2023-2027) provides a framework for the two organizations to support the Government of Malawi to progress towards a self-reliant Malawi as per the Government’s vision 2063.

Mandala said the Vision 2063 lays out what behaviors their partners and their project participants can expect of them as the vision recognizes the changing climate in which they operate with the overall vision of sustainably livelihoods and healthy lives for all in a changing climate.

He said the Strategy will alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality and the impact of climate change through community led, market based and enterprise-focused approaches so that people have access to nutritious food, clean water, decent employment and income while sustaining natural resources.

The Manager said SHA Strategy will continue to support marginalized and excluded people addressing challenges related to representation and participation at all levels by ensuring that their voices and perspectives are heard in respect to everyone’s input.

“Our approach will strengthen women’s access to and control over resources and decisions, prioritizing working with young people in line with the Malawi Vision 2063,” said Mandala.

In his remarks, Dowa District Council’s Chairperson Councilor Mayamiko Kambewa, said he would have loved if the budgetary allocation for water be increased from K12 million to K20 million or over saying this can help to implement piped water system to serve a large number of people than drilling a borehole which only serve a few people.

Kambewa said each constituency of the district is allocated K12 million for water saying this is not enough and cannot be used to implement piped water system claiming that in some areas, the water taste is not good thanking Self Help Africa for continuing supporting marginalized and excluded people in Dowa.

The Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) has on Monday offloaded about 446,000 liters of petrol in the country brought by rail from Nacala in Mozambique.

The situation raises hopes of easing fuel scarcity in the next few days in the country amidst acute forex shortages, which have made it extremely difficult for fuel importers to purchase the commodity.

PIL General Manager, Martin Msimuko told 247 Malawi News that they expect another 255 thousand liters within the week.

“Currently, we have brought in 446,000 litres by rail from Nacala and we expect another 255,000 within the week,” he said.

He further said they are also loading 700,000 litres of diesel which will come via trucks.

“We are also loading 700,000 litres of diesel by rail from the same port of Nacala .

“We are also in the process of loading close to 3 million litres of petrol to come by trucks from the ports of Beira and Dar es Salaam,” he said

Msimuko was optimistic that they will be able to beat the forex shortage saying that they are engaging with the banks to support them with forex so that they import adequate fuel supplies.

He admitted that forex still remains a major setback in bringing adequate fuel supplies in the country.

He said :”We are engaging with our banks to support us with the same so that we can have adequate supplies in the country.”

In August this year, PIL unveiled plans to sign an agreement with a supplier to be paid in the local currency for fuel imports but kept a tight lid on the company name.

It said the agreement woulf see 35 million litres of fuel purchased.

According to Reserve Bank of Malawi, the country requires $3 billion annually to meet import requirements, but only produces about $1 billion.

The Lilongwe’s Chief Resident Magistrate, Madalitso Chimwaza, is scheduled to deliver a verdict regarding the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s request to reinstate restrictions on Zuneth Sattar’s bank accounts on October 12,2023.

Initially, the Anti-Corruption Bureau had frozen Sattar’s over twenty five accounts for nearly two years during an investigation into alleged corruption.

However, on Monday, Benjamin Mandala, representing the Anti-Corruption Bureau, informed the court of their intention to revive these restrictions.

Kaphale

In response, Kalekeni Kaphale, the lawyer representing fourteen individuals whose accounts were linked to the Zuneth Sattar’s case, presented opposing arguments.

Kaphale expressed his concern that the Anti-Corruption Bureau may not have been exercising their authority diligently.

On their part, ACB officials declined to comment on the assertions by the defence lawyer after the case was adjourned.

Sattar was arrested in the UK in 2021 on allegations that he was behind corrupt activities involving over 50 Malawi government officials.

Kamphangala describes Kalindos treatment as very unfair

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard from Mvera area in Dowa Rodgers Kamphangala, has described the treatment given to activist Bon Elias Kalinfdo as very unfair and not in line with the democratic principles.

Kamphangala said 0n 30th August, 2023 Kalindo was abducted by police officers beside President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera ordered for his release from the hands of Police, something showing that in MCP there are powerful people who are overturning Chakwera’s decisions.

He said on 7th September, 2023 Malawi Police Service (MPS) officers were seen firing teargas at the activists and demonstrators siding with MCPs militias and gangsters who broke the Lilongwe Bridge despite of the court clearing the demonstrations.

Kalindo

The MCP diehard said on Friday, 15th September, 2023 that Kalindo was arrested at the Lilongwe High Court not as a human but as an animal and was whisked away to Mtakataka Police Station in Dedza away from the reach of family members and relatives to provide him with food and other necessities.

He said on 30th August, 2023 Kalindo travelled all the way from Lilongwe to Dwangwa in Nkhotakota describing this as a development which is worrisome and has painted a bad picture at the MCP as the party of death.

Kamphangala said in what many Malawians thought that Kalindo will be released on Monday 18th September, 2023 after spending three nights in police custody, Senior Resident Magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda has added another night to Kalindo to make it four to the dismay of his lawyer Stanley Chirwa.

He has reminded the MCP-led government and President Chakwera that the yardstick which they are using to measure Kalindo will bounce back saying Kalindo will be on top of them and will revenge joined by Malawians that are rallying behind him as President of the poor people in Malawi.

The MCP diehard has since warned President Chakwera that if they lose the 2025 elections, Malawians will arrest by themselves corrupt individuals of the MCP and have been enjoying immunity as that of President Chakwera.

Kamphangala said Kalindos arrest is politically motivated to silence him from organizing demonstrations against President Chakwera and the MCP having forgotten that without Kalindo sacrificing his life, Chakwera and Chilima would not have chance to enter into government.

“President Chakwera and his Vice, Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima are on these positions because of Bon Kalindo and had it been that there was no Kalindo, MCP would have by now been in the opposition benches in Parliament,” he said.

He has also accused fellow Chewas in Lilongwe for taking Lilongwe as a district of the Chewas and declaring it a no -go zone district to the activists and demonstrators, expressing fears that Malawi is not for the Chewas alone but for all.

Kamphangala has since advised President Chakwera to address the nation on Kalindos arrests and subsequent charges levelled against him for Malawians to restore their lost trust that they have a President who listens to the cries of the citizens.
