Chakwera outlines pillars of Malawi foreign Policy

0

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says to nurture peaceful co-existence with other nations the country’s foreign policy ought to be anchored on three strong pillars. The President was speaking at Kamuzu Palace in the Capital City, Lilongwe, through the ninth weekly radio address.

The Malawi leader said he will do everything possible to make the country live to its billing as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’ which he described as an attribute to the country’s peaceable and friendly disposition. “Both as a person and as President, I see the world as a global family of equal members with a common origin and distinct histories and cultures that make everyone’s place and participation in global affairs indispensable.

“Therefore, my intent is to maintain contact and dialogue with any nation that welcomes diplomacy as catalyst for peace,” said Chakwera.

The President said the synergistic effect that comes by cooperating with other countries will be advanced.

He said: “The second pillar of our foreign policy is safeguarding Malawi’s national and developmental interests in the areas of security, economics, and geopolitics. I believe we will accomplish more for our nation by working together with other nations than on our own.

“This is not because we lack capacity, but because we want our nation’s development to be exponential, not incremental.”

As an indication that Government has taken a right direction in clearing the ‘rubble’ in governance systems, the President  said a list of the country’s global friends is growing.

The Malawi leader said his Administration will use military innovation and intelligence to ensure no inch of the sovereign territory of the country is encroached.

For this reason Chakwera will engage with heads of neighbouring countries to ensure there’s a win-win outcome.

“Considering that all three of our neighboring countries are several times larger than us and that our peoples share a common cultural heritage, I look forward to engaging my counterparts in Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique in finding win-win methods of keeping our shared borders secure,” said the President.

In the weekly radio broadcast Chakwera also made mentioned  that all is set to make his  inaugural United Nationd General Assembly (UNGA) address.

Contrary to the tradition that all heads of state have to gather in New York City this summer for UNGA meetings, this  time around due to prevalence of COVID-19, the Malawi leader also in capacity as Chairperson for 47 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) will join the meeting virtually and champion the agenda of the country and the LDCs.

As the Tonse government continues to explore ways of promoting the tourism sector in the country, the strategic director of Malawi Congress Party ,Dr Kenneth Zikhale Reeeves Ng’oma has urged authorities  to consider upgrading Chiwengo village into a tourist hub.  Chiwengo Village is the home of former president and father and founder of Malawi nation Ngwazi Dr Hasting Kamuzu Banda.

Speaking to 247malawi News, Dr Zikhale Ng’oma said Malawi is blessed with a lot of heritage places  that if fully utilised can be big tourist attraction centres . He singled out Chiwengo, as the place rich in history and that has potential to be a big tourist hub. “We are talking of Kamuzu here , the father and founder of Malawi, those of old will remember well  the story of Chiwengo village  where the Ngwazi came from , the modern generation will not only benefit from the rich history that comes from Chiwengo  but both local and international tourist will flock to the village” argued Zikhale

Dr Ken Zikhale Ng’oma: Chiwengo needs rehabilitation to be a tourist hub

Zikhale acknowledged that for this to happen, the village need to go through full rehabilitation as most of the roads and houses are not in good condition “ the village need to be rehabilitated to inject some life in it , the street lights need to be brought back and the roads  around the village worked on”

The Tonse administration has made tourism promotion one of the key areas as it has potential to contribute hugely towards its target of creating one million jobs. Tourism Minister Dr Michael Usi  is on record saying he aims at promoting both local and international tourism  to help boast the economy of the country.

Gates towards Chiwengo Village

The need for Kamuzu’s Chiwengo village rehabilitation into Malawi Tourism attraction

By Allan Mandindi

Despite some bad publicity that was painted on Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi’s first President. His contribution to Africa and Malawi is something we should all not underlook but be proud of. Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda is one of great African sons that pushed for independence of many African countries including Nyasaland and Rhodesia.

He is well appreciated within the Pan African circle and he appears in so many African Historical publications and even at the Headquarters of institutions like the African Union the portrait of Dr Banda appears in the lobby, this show how great his contribution to the Pan African movement was. As Malawi with the new Tonse administration under Dr Lazarus Chakwera is geared up to open up the economy.

There is a need to look at areas we can utilise to attract tourists some might be academic tourists that would love to understand and appreciate the history of people like Dr. Banda. We have historical land marks in Kasungu, the beautiful history of the Chiwengo village up to Nguluyanawambe. The Kamuzu Mausoleum and the Malawi Congress Party Headquarters. All these sites are part of the rich Malawi Heritage and need to get government support to help attract tourist to Malawi.

Chiwengo, looking dilapidated and need rehabilitation

Chiwengo Village in Kasungu is where the first president of Malawi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda was born. This area is historical and needs serious rehabilitation work so it can attract tourists.

Dr Ken Zikhale Ng’oma:Pushing for Chiwengo to be tourist hub

We applaud people like Hon Zikhale Ng’oma who have been lobbying for Chiwengo Village to be rehabilitated. Its a beautiful area with street lights. This is the souvenir Dr. Banda left us so we can pass on to future generations. He left a legacy that we cannot afford to let it die but rather candle it so that the future generation can appreciate.

Nankhumwa launches coup to take over DPP party-ready to form new party

0

A day after it was announced that DPP party had called  the current Leader of Opposition to a disciplinary hearing , it appears Nankhumwa and his supporters have been quick to launch a coup  that is aimed at completely taking over the party from the hands of  current leader ,former President Peter Mutharika

Our sources indicate that DPP is at the moment divided into two camps  and the majority of the MPs that the party has in parliament have confirmed their allegiance to Nankhumwa Camp. Reports also indicates that most of the local structures are in favour of Nankhumwa, a thing that has galvanised extra strength for the camp  to go for the full take over  without waiting for the conventions.

According to a strategist in Nankhumwa Camp who spoke on condition of anonymity, the camp is ready to form a new party if the  party hierarchy decides to impose another leader rather than Nankhumwa.

So far , Nankhumwa  and his loyalists have hijacked  the party’s official Facebook page and are posting propaganda  in support of the  him.

The well known DPP online mouthpiece newspaper Malawi Voice has also changed tunes and is posting propaganda in support of Nankhumwa

Nankhumwa was called for a disciplinary hearing , which has since been adjourned accused of making himself leader of opposition in parliament,  visiting opposition members without authorisation from the party president and of suspected use of fake academic certificates.
