Two UNIMA students co-author a book ” Bulb in the house”

By Chisomo Phiri

Two first year students studying bachelor of arts ( Humanities) at the University of Malawi ( UNIMA) Alfred Kamwendo and Success Masauli have published a book titled Bulb in the house.

The book is expected to be launched on February 3, 2022 at a venue to be announced later.

Speaking in an interview, a book co-author, Alfred Kamwendo said the book is a collection of poems and short stories that tackle different issues of our modern life.

Kamwendo said the main messages in the book focus on social-political problems Malawi as a nation face such as corruption, Mental health and patriotism.

He said the book has brought the solutions to these social-political challenges for social-economic growth of Malawi.

” This is a nice book where we have good and real life short stories and poems. As young people we have to provide solutions to some of the things negatively affect our nation and make it not to grow. The title ” Bulb in the house simply symbolizes the solutions, a light that enables us to see corruption and other social-politica problems and how best to solve them. We hope this book is a solution as it contains these solutions in its chapters”, said Kamwendo.

Alfred Kamwendo and Success Masauli

Kamwendo encouraged his fellow young writers to have a spirit of writing what the society must read and listen.

” Age is just a number. Dream but do not sleep. Work smarter to achieve your dreams and write what the society must read and listen,” he said.

He thanked his fellow classmates at the University for helping them to write and publish the book saying without them the dream could have dead and buried in the graveyard of forgetfulness.

Responding on how Malawi is performing in the writing industry, Kamwendo said currently, it seems that the writing culture is growing and glowing only that the reading culture is what not performing well hence a need to promote it among the youths through establishment of libraries in both urban and rural area.

In his comment, a Lecturer in the English department at the University Dr. Innocent Akili Ngulube said this unbelievable powerful book from the first year students. He said he never expected the two young writers to come up with a collection that could tackle social-political problems in the way they have done. He urged them to continue writing stories that will change Malawi.

The two are inspired by the veteran writers David Rubadiri, Zondiwe Mbano, Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka and they want to be like one these writers in future.

They are urging well-wishers to give them support so as they continue amaze the world adding that age is just a number that does not define one’s creative ability.

The Bulb in the house is currently pre-ordered at MK1,500 ( soft copy ) and MK3,000 ( hard copy).

Why ‘Ikugwa Ntola’ Won’t Work On Chakwera- Off the wall of Hon Peter Dimba

By Peter Dimba

One of the greatest Evangelists of the 21st century, CCAP-Nkhoma Synod has ever had, was the departed Evang.Shadreck Wame of Salima who was brutally butchered by the ‘devil’ himself for depopulating hell.

He preached the Word with neither ‘swag’ nor compromise. His preaching was with such great anointing and conviction that he won many souls for Christ.
He had this flair and originality that could make both the sinner and the saint want to listen on to his sermons.
I remember in our college days, whenever he was invited to preach at either CCAPSO, SCOM or UCC, the Main Lecture Theatre would always fill up to the brim. So powerful was his ministration that every soul would be convinced and convicted to live for God.

Privileged in our days to have led UCC and my Mesho, Joy Khangamwa at the helm of CCAPSO, we had the honor of interacting with the Man of God closely at our room.He exuded so much glory in humility and simplicity.
Like John the Baptist, the late Wame’s message was the now not so common ‘repent or perish for the Kingdom of God is at nigh’

One of the tape-recorded messages which was widely circulated at the dawn of the new millennium was titled ‘Ikugwa Ntola’.
It was based on a folktale that when a hunter killed his prey, he carried it up on his shoulders on his way back home.Since the animal was of a considerable size, the hind legs were hanging over the back as he walked home.
When a hyena, a renowned scavenger that usually feasts on what others have already killed, saw the hanging legs of the animal on the shoulders of the hunter, it thought the carcass would soon fall off the shoulders for it (the hyena) to feast on.

Despite the fact that the journey back home was long, the hyena never got tired of following the hunter, salivating all the way thinking ‘ikugwa ntola’(I will get it when it drops off).
There were times the hunter stumbled as he maneuvered his way out of the forest and the hyena could cheerfully grin thinking that was the hour the dead animal could drop off but the hunter held on to his kill until he reached the village.

Since the scavenger became so much fixated on ‘ikugwa ntola’, it did not know that the hunter had reached his home village and by the time the hyena got back to its senses and woke up from its fantasies as a result of the villagers’ shouts of ‘fisi uyo, fisi uyo’, it was too late to escape, got clobbered and prematurely returned to dust.

The ascendency of President Chakwera to power left some people groups, some Parties, Associations, Cartels, Families, Cronies, Business Associates, bitter, frustrated and heart-broken and they have hated him from day one of his office.

President Chakwera

Some of them publicly vowed that anyone from the Central Region or the Northern region will never rule Malawi again.Others usurped divine authority and cursed themselves that Malawi Congress party will never rule Malawi again as long as they were alive.(May their Souls Rest In Peace), forgetting that there is a Sovereign God above who can do anything at anytime without consulting anyone and that Him alone reigns over the affairs of men and controls their history.

For these people, there is nothing good that Chakwera can do, they will appreciate.
They will always amplify his administration’s gaffes, balloon his personality weaknesses and trivialize his achievements in the name of ‘ikugwa ntola’.

HH across the western border will do something today for which they will loudly applaud and when Chakwera’s Administration does exactly the same the following week, they will ferociously bash him left, right and center.

We never knew the blue camp and their legal minds were really serious about bringing down Chakwera Administration through the Electoral Commissioners case until their leader openly spoke at Chonde in Mulanje that he was ready to be their torch bearer in the fresh elections that never were. They were so serious that they began to hold furtive meetings with some of President Chakwera’s traitors on possible combinations and permutations only to be frustrated by the Constitutional Court in a battle one of Chakwera’s Generals, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda demonstrated that he is a legal luminary.
They got slapped with litigation costs of K200 million Kwacha all in the name of ‘Ikugwa ntola’

Not wanting to let Chakwera go, like the Pharaoh’s pursuit on the Israelites, they created the Bawn Calyndal demonstrations in an attempt to destabilize Chakwera’s Administration with inflation as a perfect pretext….inflation that is global and which has affected even the developed Western countries as Covid continues to wreck social and economic havoc.

Bawn Calyndal is like a political legion…possessed by several political big shots with ‘ikugwa ntola’ hyena mentality who in their wild and unbridled political fantasies think President Chakwera will trip and loose hold of power. No, he won’t.
A General who conquers a heavily fortified city, will always burn bridges he and his army used in their conquest lest another General uses the same to conquer them.
So after the Court case, this Bawn Calyndal demos strategy won’t work against President Chakwera in the name of ‘ikugwa ntola’

Many have a wrong caricature of President Chakwera because he is a man who hardly expresses his feelings. He is too careful and conscientious justifiably misconstrued as tardiness by his foes and others.
However his adversaries and those that have possessed Bawn Calyndal must never mistake his conscientious and magnanimous personality for naivety/ lack of sophistication.
He fully knows that in this political game, you blink, you’re gone and his administration won’t blink.
And those mischievously provoking his administration, must be fully aware of Newton’s third law of motion and be ready to get an equal (if not double) and opposite reaction in return.

He who comes to equity must come with clean hands.

President Chakwera will certainly soon hit a reset button for he knows exactly where there is a weak link and dead wood and all those fixated on ‘ikugwa ntola’ will have a rude awakening.Unfortunately it will be too late for them.

Flames Woyeee!

The Lilongwe magistrate court has reserved to tomorrow Friday, its ruling on social media activist Joshua Chisa Mbele’s bail application.

Mneneli Yoswa (Joshua Chisa Mbele) On his way to court

As a bail condition, the State wants Joshua Chisa Mbele to be restricted from posting on social media anything relating to this case or anything that has the potential to damage the reputation of others.

But defense counsel Gilbert Khonyongwa is against the limitation of his client’s freedom of expression arguing that the Constitution is clear on limitation of rights.
According to Khonyongwa he does not think the state has met the Constitutional set threshold for limitation of his rights.

Andu said the rugby player met the alleged victim in a Manchester nightclub where she was celebrating her 18th birthday and then rang Ms Ntonya to inform her that he was bringing the teenager back to her home.

Ms Ntonya told MailOnline: ‘He wanted me to get involved. At night I was very sleepy and just let them into the spare room. I didn’t want to be involved.’

Ms Ntonya insisted that it was she in fact she who called the police after finding the girl sobbing in her spare bedroom on Sunday morning.

She said: ‘I know him as he is a client of mine. He rang me and said: ‘I have got a girl’.

‘The next morning, I saw the girl really upset in my spare room. She couldn’t understand why she was half-naked and, in a stranger’s, flat.’

She added: ‘She was crying and upset. She was shocked and I was shocked. But I was also angry that he had brought this girl here in this state.

‘He is very arrogant and thinks he can behave how he likes. I just took the girl out and rang the police. She was really upset, and I just wanted to help her and do the right thing.’

The rugby player was taken away by officers in handcuffs on suspicion of rape while she was held on suspicion of administering a substance with intent to cause a sexual offence.

Both have been released on bail while detectives continue their investigations.

Ms Ntonya protested: ‘I have done nothing wrong. I did not drug her. I have definitely not committed a crime.

‘I told the police the full story and the fact that I am an escort.’

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman issued a statement on Wednesday morning following reports of an incident at a nightclub in the city which stated: ‘Officers were called shortly before 11am on Sunday 9 January 2022 to a report of a sexual assault on a female on Thorpeness Square in Manchester.

‘A woman in her late teens was reported to have been sexually assaulted. She is currently being supported by specialist officers. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and a 41-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of administering a substance with intent to cause a sexual offence.

‘Both have since been released on bail as enquiries continue and a number of lines of enquiry are being followed up by detectives.’
