Mayor Jomo Osman Seals MHC Offices Over K433 Million Debt

In a bold move to recover millions in unpaid city rates, Blantyre City Mayor Jomo Osman, alongside the Vice Mayor, councillors, directors, and media representatives, moved to close the offices of the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) today.

The Mayor confirmed the development on social media, stating that operations at the state-owned housing body have been halted until a significant portion of the outstanding debt is settled. “Today, the Vice Mayor, councillors, directors, and media representatives, and I have taken the decision to close Malawi Housing Corporation due to outstanding debts owed to Blantyre City Council. Operations will resume once a portion of the payment is made,” Osman announced.

According to reports from the scene, the enforcement was swift and firm. Mayor Osman personally led the operation at MHC’s head offices, reportedly ordering staff to vacate the premises within just seven minutes . The debt in question is understood to be approximately K433 million in unpaid city rates, a significant sum that cripples the council’s ability to deliver services . This action aligns with the council’s recent hardline stance on revenue collection; Blantyre City is currently owed billions by various property owners, and MHC has historically been one of the major defaulters .

The Mayor’s decisive action has sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Many residents applauded his assertiveness. Phillip Benson Simkoko heaped praise on the Mayor, commenting, “Bwana Jomo when it comes to work guys out of all the mayor we have in the country uyu ndi number one this guy can work better than some of the minister we have APM apoint bwana Jomo as minister you won’t regret.”

However, others questioned the abruptness of the shutdown. A user identified as Zondwayo queried the lack of prior discussion, asking, “Why not engage in dialogue first?” This reflects the tension between the urgent need for councils to fund essential services and the preference for negotiated settlements with defaulting institutions .

The closure of MHC comes at a critical time for the corporation, which was recently ordered by the President to relocate its headquarters back to Blantyre from Lilongwe . It remains unclear how this shutdown will affect that transition or the corporation’s overall operations.

‘I Will Work With Mutharika’ – MCP Deputy SG’s Shocking Statement Sparks Resignation Rumors

In a development that has sent shockwaves through Malawi’s political landscape, a video clip circulating widely on social media shows Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Deputy Secretary General and Mangochi Monkey Bay legislator Gerald Kazembe vowing to work with President Peter Mutharika to facilitate development in his constituency.

The unexpected pledge of cooperation with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader has triggered intense debate about the legislator’s political loyalties and future within the main opposition party.

The clip, which has been shared thousands of times across various platforms, captures Kazembe expressing his commitment to collaborate with Mutharika specifically to ensure that development projects reach his constituents in Mangochi. This pragmatic approach has been interpreted in sharply contrasting ways by political observers and party loyalists. While some view it as a pragmatic move to secure resources for his constituency from the government of the day, others see it as a troubling signal of disloyalty to the MCP, which currently serves as the official opposition in Parliament under the leadership of Lazarus Chakwera .

Gerald Kazembe

This latest controversy is not occurring in a vacuum. Kazembe has been at the center of internal party tensions since the MCP’s defeat in the September 2025 general elections. He was notably vocal in opposing party president Chakwera’s appointment of Simplex Chithyola Banda as Leader of Opposition in Parliament, arguing that the position should be filled through an election by MCP Members of Parliament rather than through a direct appointment . Kazembe even wrote to the Clerk of Parliament insisting that the party would conduct its own election for the leadership post, directly challenging Chakwera’s authority .

The simmering conflict escalated further when Kazembe, along with other senior party figures including first deputy president Catherine Gotani Hara and Eisenhower Mkaka, reportedly boycotted a parliamentary caucus called by Chakwera in Lilongwe . A leaked WhatsApp exchange also revealed a heated verbal spat between Kazembe and Chithyola Banda, in which Kazembe accused his colleague of authoring a contentious memo and attempting to undermine other party members’ ambitions .

Political analysts suggest that the internal strife reflects deeper divisions within the MCP following its electoral loss, with some senior figures increasingly viewing Chakwera’s leadership as a political liability rather than an asset . The party, which prided itself on discipline and hierarchy, now finds its internal conflicts playing out in public view, potentially weakening its effectiveness in holding the government accountable .

As of now, Kazembe has not issued any statement commenting on the viral clip or clarifying his remarks about working with Mutharika. Crucially, he has also made no official announcement regarding his status within the MCP, leaving unanswered the question of whether he intends to resign from the party or maintain his position while pursuing cross-party cooperation. The absence of clarification has only fueled further speculation about his political intentions and the potential realignments that may be taking shape behind the scenes.

The Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) has revealed that a new sponsor has been secured to support the region’s top football league, according to regional chairperson Dyless Kachala.

Kachala disclosed the development during an awards ceremony held earlier this week where the association honored outstanding teams, players, and journalists who performed well in the recently concluded season of the Thumbs Up Southern Region Football League.

The ceremony marked the end of the previous campaign and also provided a platform for SRFA officials to reflect on the league’s progress and future direction.

During the event, it was confirmed that Rab Processors Limited, the company that had been sponsoring the regional league since 2020, will no longer continue with its financial support.

The withdrawal of the sponsor raised concerns among football stakeholders in the southern region who were eager to know how the league would sustain its operations moving forward.

However, Kachala assured the football fraternity that efforts to secure a new sponsor had already been successful and the league’s continuity would not be affected.

He expressed gratitude to Rab Processors Limited for the role the company has played in developing and sustaining the competition over the past few years.

Kachala described the company as a reliable partner that stood with the association from 2020 until the end of their sponsorship agreement.

According to the SRFA leader, the support from Rab Processors Limited helped improve the competitiveness and organization of the regional league during its tenure as sponsor.
Despite the end of that partnership, Kachala said the association has already identified a new sponsor ready to take over the responsibility of supporting the competition.

He further revealed that the official announcement of the new sponsor will be made very soon as final preparations are being completed.

Kachala indicated that the announcement is expected either later this week or early next week, bringing renewed hope for the future of football in the Southern Region.
