Dedza, April 28, 2025 — Incumbent Member of Parliament for Dedza Mlunduni, Hon. Ishmael Onani, has clinched victory in a fiercely contested Malawi Congress Party (MCP) primary election, defeating high-profile challengers, including the party’s National Campaign Director and Minister of Information, Hon. Moses Kunkuyu Kalongashawa.
The primaries, held at Dedza Stadium, saw Onani overcome a crowded field that also included Kondi Msungama, the party’s First Deputy Publicity Director. The win solidifies Onani’s position as the MCP’s parliamentary candidate for Dedza Mlunduni in the September 16 general elections.

Political analysts describe the race as a test of grassroots loyalty versus party machinery, with Onani’s victory signaling strong local support despite Kunkuyu’s seniority in the MCP hierarchy. Supporters celebrated the outcome, praising Onani’s development record, including road projects and youth empowerment initiatives in the constituency.
Kunkuyu, who also serves as government spokesperson, conceded defeat gracefully, urging unity ahead of the general elections. Meanwhile, Msungama pledged to rally behind Onani, emphasizing the need for a united MCP front.
With this win, Onani now shifts focus to the main election, where he will face challengers from other parties
