Four suspected armed robbers arrested in Lilongwe

By Jones Gadama

Lingadzi police in Lilongwe have apprehended four suspected armed robbers who were allegedly terrorizing and robbing households in New Area 43.

According to Central West Police Spokesperson Foster Benjamin, the suspects were caught after police received a tip-off about a planned robbery at a construction site in the area.

The police operation led to the arrest of Precious Malipo, 20, Duncan Charles, 21, and Khumbo Makwinja, 27, all from Mgona township, along with James Ngwenya, who was shot in the stomach while attempting to snatch an officer’s rifle. Ngwenya is currently receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

The suspects, along with other gang members who are still at large, were allegedly involved in a series of robberies targeting households and businesses in the city.

The police operation was swift and strategic, with officers manning the scene and preventing the suspects from escaping.

This arrest is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat rising cases of theft and armed robbery in Lilongwe.

In a similar incident earlier this year, Lingadzi police arrested 12 suspected armed robbers linked to a series of crimes in Areas 25 and 43, among other locations.

The police recovered crucial evidence, including a pistol and stolen property, and are continuing investigations to determine if the group has connections to other unsolved crimes.

The police have urged residents and business owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help prevent further crimes.

With these arrests, the police aim to reassure the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order in the city.

The suspects are currently in police custody, and further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of their involvement in various crimes.

The police are working to build a strong case against the suspects, who will face formal charges in court.

The arrest of these suspects brings relief to residents in the affected areas, who had been living in fear due to the rampant crimes. The police’s proactive approach in combating crime is a step towards ensuring the safety of communities in Lilongwe.
