Kamuzu Stadium violence sparks debate on football fan safety

By Rahim Abdul

A heated discussion on security at football matches has erupted following an incident at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where two men are accused of leading violent acts that left property damaged.

Paul Majawa, from Ndirande, and Edison Chilabade, from Chilobwe, appeared before the Blantyre Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court this week in connection with the chaos that erupted after FCB Nyasa Big Bullets drew 3-3 with Karonga United on August 10.

During the match, Bullets had led 3-1 before Karonga fought back, a comeback that reportedly triggered anger among some supporters.

According to police, the two suspects allegedly stoned and broke the windows of the Bullets’ team bus in protest.

The court, presided over by Senior Resident Magistrate Lawrence Mchilima, denied them bail, citing ongoing investigations and the seriousness of the charges.

The case has been adjourned to September 1, 2025, when trial proceedings are expected to begin.

The incident has raised broader concerns over safety measures at football venues in Malawi.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) officials have repeatedly called on fans to exercise discipline, while urging clubs and stadium authorities to improve security arrangements.

The police have indicated that investigations are still underway and more arrests could follow as they continue tracking others suspected of involvement.
