Kingston urges government support as Malawi Film Industry gains momentum

Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) President Dorothy Kingston says Malawi’s film industry has undergone significant transformation, with recent productions showing improved quality and greater international potential.

Kingston noted that locally produced films are not only visually appealing but also contributing to economic growth.

She explained that some of these films are now being sold abroad, generating foreign exchange for the country.

According to Kingston, many films now highlight Malawi’s tourist attractions, which can inspire international viewers to visit the country, boosting tourism and revenue.

She emphasized that her long-term vision is for Malawi’s film industry to grow into a regional powerhouse similar to Nigeria’s Nollywood.

Kingston appealed to government authorities to invest more in the sector, including building training institutions where actors and filmmakers can acquire professional skills.

Kingston also encouraged local actors and filmmakers to remain committed to uplifting the nation through their craft.
