President Peter Mutharika has issued an executive order directing the relocation of the headquarters of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), and Malawi Prison Services (MPS) to their former locations.
According to Executive Order No. 1 of 2025, dated October 10, 2025, the directive takes effect immediately.
Under the order, MACRA, MEC, and MHC are to move their headquarters from Lilongwe back to Blantyre, while MPS will relocate its headquarters from Lilongwe to Zomba.
The document further stipulates that all relocations must be completed within a three-month period.

Mutharika has long contended that the previous administration’s decision to shift these entities to Lilongwe eroded Blantyre’s standing as Malawi’s commercial city.
During his campaign trail,Mutharika repeatedly underscored that such transfers stripped Blantyre of vital economic and administrative clout.
