Malawi Music Legend Isaac Liwotcha Appeals for Help Amid Medical Crisis in India

By Durell Namasani

Isaac Liwotcha, a foundational voice of Malawi’s iconic Balaka music scene, has made a heartfelt public appeal for financial assistance to cover his medical treatment at a private hospital in India.

The musician, famous for hits like “Ambuye Mutimvere,” took to Facebook to connect directly with his fans and the public. In a poignant post, he asked, “Hello Everyone. I have a question to you all. Do you really love me? If yes, are you going to support me with a little contribution towards my medical treatment at Yashoda private hospital in India?”

Liwotcha is seeking treatment for spine spondylosis, a degenerative and often painful condition affecting the spinal discs and joints. He provided a WhatsApp number, +265 999 449 502, for well-wishers willing to contribute, adding that “Your support will be highly appreciated.”

This appeal casts a spotlight on the often-precarious situation facing veteran artists, whose music once filled the airwaves but who now face hardships in their later years. Liwotcha was a prominent figure during the early days of Balaka Music, a genre and movement that defined a generation of Malawian sound.

His hit album, Ambuye Mutimvere, remains a classic in the country’s contemporary music landscape. Despite health challenges, his passion for music has not dimmed. As recently as 2023, he engaged with fans about his creative process ahead of a new single release and promoted the re-release of his 2004 reggae-dominant project, “Musandipute,” on modern streaming platforms.

For now, the man whose music has provided the soundtrack for so many lives now waits, hoping the community he once entertained will now answer his call.
