The Tombstone unveiling ceremony for the late George Mtafu, a former politician and doctor, took place in the city of Blantyre.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Jimmy Mbendera expressed relief that their relative’s tomb is now complete, stating that the construction of the tombstone was delayed due to financial difficulties. Well-wishers including former state president Bakili Muluzi and business expert Thomson Mpinganjira supported the construction work with nearly 11 million Kwacha.

Speaking on behalf of Bakili Muluzi at the event, the leader of the UDF party, Atupele Muluzi, said there is much that today’s youth can learn from the life of the late Mtafu, including being dedicated to serving the lives of others. Ziliro Chibambo, the chairperson of the committee overseeing the tomb construction, encouraged the nation’s leaders to have an interest in remembering and helping people who played a remarkable role in the nation’s development.

The late George Mtafu was born on September 27, 1943 and died in a car accident on October 20, 2015, surviving by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren. Dr. George Mtafu served as a cabinet minister during the presidency of Bakili Muluzi. He held the portfolio of Minister of Health, where he was involved in overseeing the country’s public health initiatives during that era.
