By Durell Namasani

The National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has awarded 103 university scholarships through its MO Excellence programme, benefiting both underprivileged and high-achieving students across seven institutions. The initiative, which has cost the bank K365 million, includes 59 scholarships for students in need and 44 for top performers.

Speaking at a ceremony held on Friday at Mzuzu University, Bessie Nyirenda, an Executive Board Member of NBM, emphasized the importance of education in driving the country’s long-term development. “Education is the backbone of the Malawi 2063 vision,” she said.

During the event, Mzuzu University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Simeon Gwayi, praised the bank’s efforts. As part of the programme, NBM awarded K1 million each to five outstanding students at Mzuzu University. In addition, four needy and deserving students at the university received full scholarships covering tuition fees, a laptop, accommodation, health care, and stationery allowances—valued at K1.7 million per student.
