Malawi national football team coach Kalisto Pasuwa has expressed disappointment over his side’s inability to convert scoring opportunities after the Flames suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ethiopia in an international friendly match played in Addis Ababa.
Despite creating several promising chances throughout the encounter, Malawi failed to find the back of the net, allowing the hosts to claim victory in a tightly contested affair.
Pasuwa noted that finishing remained the biggest challenge for his team, saying the players produced encouraging attacking movements but lacked the final touch in front of goal.
The Zimbabwean tactician, however, was quick to praise the overall commitment shown by his squad, especially considering the difficult conditions and the competitive nature of the match.
He singled out some returning players for impressive performances, including Christopher Kumwembe and Francisco Madinga, who were making their way back into the national team setup after lengthy absences.
According to Pasuwa, the duo demonstrated quality and determination, giving the technical panel positive options as preparations continue for future assignments.
Malawi started the match brightly and looked confident during the opening stages, enjoying periods of possession and putting pressure on the Ethiopian defence.
However, Ethiopia gradually settled into the game and capitalized on a crucial moment to score the only goal that ultimately separated the two sides.
Looking ahead, Pasuwa emphasized the need for the Flames to improve in key areas, particularly finishing, if they are to secure positive results in upcoming matches.
The Flames will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they face Ethiopia again in a second friendly encounter as part of their preparations for the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
