One of Malawi’s prominent lawyers, Gift Katundu, says rapper S Khrizy could still face legal action over a song in which he allegedly insulted Scorchers star Temwa Chawinga.
Katundu said authorities responsible for prosecuting criminal cases could consider opening a case against the musician over the song.
Writing on his Facebook page, Katundu said prosecutors could use laws governing the sharing of information through the internet.
He said such laws prohibit people from using online platforms to insult or abuse others.
According to Katundu, the fact that S Khrizy deleted the song and apologised after receiving criticism does not necessarily rule out possible legal action.
Katundu said he believes the musician deserves an appropriate punishment if found to have committed an offence.
He argued that the matter should not simply end with a public reprimand if the conduct amounts to a criminal offence.
S Khrizy recently came under heavy criticism after releasing a song targeting Temwa Chawinga, one of Malawi’s leading footballers and a key member of the Malawi Scorchers.
The song sparked widespread condemnation from members of the public, particularly football supporters who viewed the lyrics as disrespectful towards the celebrated player.
Following the backlash, S Khrizy removed the song from platforms where it had been published and subsequently issued an apology.
The musician said he regretted his actions and indicated that such an incident would not happen again.
The controversy has since raised questions about the limits of artistic expression and the potential legal consequences of using digital platforms to publish content considered offensive or insulting to other people.
