Malawi moves to strengthen human rights protection in business

By Burnett Munthali

Justice Minister Charles Mhango says Malawi’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights will guide companies in conducting their operations responsibly while protecting people from harm.

Mhango made the remarks during the launch of the plan, which seeks to strengthen accountability in the business sector and promote respect for human rights.

He said the framework will guide businesses on human rights due diligence, enabling them to identify potential risks, prevent abuses and address harmful practices associated with their operations.

The minister added that the plan will help companies comply with relevant laws and regulations, including those linked to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative Fenella Frost said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote sustainable business practices while ensuring economic development respects human rights.

Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry(MCCCI) president Ronald Ngwira previously said AfCFTA presents significant opportunities for Malawi, but its benefits will depend on effective management and the country’s production capacity.

The National Action Plan is expected to guide responsible business conduct as Malawi pursues economic growth while protecting workers and communities.
