LUANAR urges farmers to plant early-maturing, drought-resistant crops ahead of El Niño

By Burnett Munthali

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) has advised farmers to prioritise early-maturing and drought-tolerant crops as Malawi prepares for possible reduced rainfall associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The advice comes amid concerns that some districts in the Southern Region could experience below-average rainfall during the coming agricultural season, threatening crop production and household food security.

LUANAR research official Patrick Chimseu delivered the message during the annual general meeting of the Southern Region Press Club (SRPC) held in Mangochi.

Chimseu said the university had conducted research into crop varieties capable of maturing quickly and surviving prolonged dry spells, with particular attention to beans and cassava.

He explained that promoting suitable crop varieties would help farmers adapt to unpredictable weather conditions and improve their chances of harvesting sufficient food despite possible rainfall shortages.

The university’s advice highlights the importance of climate-smart agriculture, crop diversification and early preparation in protecting farming households against climate-related production risks.
