By Durell Namasani

The Malawian music scene is in mourning following the tragic passing of Lester Mwathunga, a founding member and bass guitar virtuoso of the legendary MBC Band Makasu.

The somber news was broken by fellow bandmate and Makasu co-founder, Stain Phiri, who posted a heartfelt message on his Facebook page. He wrote, “Lester Mwathunga is no more. To be remembered as the wizard on Bass Guitar in MBC Band Makasu.”

This simple yet powerful statement has become a focal point for the national reaction, perfectly capturing the immense talent that Malawi has lost. Mwathunga was renowned for his incredible skill, laying down the infectious grooves that became the unmistakable backbone of Makasu’s iconic sound throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Social media platforms have been flooded with condolences from heartbroken fans who grew up with the band’s music. Many are sharing classic Makasu tracks, highlighting Mwathunga’s intricate basslines and crediting him as a pivotal influence in shaping Malawi’s modern musical identity.
