African Unity Key to Development, Says Foreign Minister Nancy Tembo at African Day Celebrations

Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo has called for African nations to unite and collaborate in transforming the continent’s development. She made the remarks on Saturday during the African Day celebrations held at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe. 

Tembo commended the participating countries for showcasing diverse cultures, foods, and dances, emphasizing the significance of the day.

“We celebrate African Day to honor the founding of the Organisation of African Unity by our forefathers, who envisioned a developed Africa as we transitioned from colonialism to independence,” she said. 

“Africa must unite and integrate to harness its available resources for the transformation of its nations,” she added. 

Moroccan Ambassador to Malawi, Abdelkader Nahi, highlighted the event’s role in exposing Africa’s rich resources, traditions, and potential for shared progress. 

“Celebrating African Day is vital as it fosters collaboration in utilizing our resources—minerals, lakes, mountains, and more—to drive development under a common goal,” he said. 

This year’s event was marked under the theme *“Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”* African Day is observed annually on May 25.
