Vice President Jane Ansah has urged traditional leaders in the country to promote peace and unity among their subjects, describing the values as essential for meaningful national development.

She made the remarks on Saturday at Jobe Nyaka Village in the area of Traditional Authority(T/A) Kalumbu in Lilongwe District during the coronation ceremony of her cousin, Alida Nyaka Mazungwi, as Village Headwoman Jobe Nyaka.

Speaking in her capacity as a family member, the VP said the government, under the leadership of President Arthur Peter Mutharika, remains committed to fostering unity among all Malawians regardless of tribe, religion, or political affiliation.

“As chiefs, you must lead by example by promoting peace and unity among your subjects.

“You should remain impartial and serve with integrity in the implementation of government programmes in your areas, including the distribution of relief food items,” said Ansah.

She further assured the gathering that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that no Malawian dies of hunger, despite the challenges the country is facing.

Speaking on behalf of fellow traditional leaders, Senior Chief Kalumbu said chiefs will continue to serve as custodians of development, social cohesion, and cultural heritage within their communities.

During the event, the VP, through the Dr. Jane Ansah Foundation, distributed 150 bags of maize flour to vulnerable households in the area.

The newly installed Village Headwoman Jobe Nyaka is a retired civil servant who previously served as Principal Youth Officer.

She retired from the civil service in 2019.
