Burkina Faso says it has thwarted an alleged coup attempt against President Ibrahim Traore, accusing former transitional president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba of orchestrating the plot.
The security minister, Mahamadou Sana, told state television RTB that the plan involved targeted assassinations of military and civilian officials, beginning with an attempt to kill Traore.
He said Damiba was responsible for planning, funding, and recruiting participants while assuring the public that the situation was under control.

Traore seized power in September 2022, ousting Damiba, who had himself overthrown President Roch Marc Christian Kabore months earlier.
The alleged plot was foiled thanks to the professionalism of the intelligence services, according to Sana.
The plan involved a series of targeted assassinations, starting with an attempt to kill Traore, either at close range or by planting explosives at his residence.
Damiba is accused of recruiting both civilians and soldiers to participate in the plot.
The security minister reassured the public that the situation was under control, urging them to remain calm.
Investigations and arrests are ongoing, and all those involved will face the prosecutor and the full force of the law.
The foiled coup attempt highlights the ongoing instability in Burkina Faso, a country struggling with jihadist violence and economic challenges.
The plot’s failure underscores the government’s vigilance, but concerns about regional security persist.
The situation raises questions about Burkina Faso’s internal security and regional dynamics.
