President Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated the government’s plans to turn the National Economic Empowerment Fund into a National Development Bank. Speaking to a large gathering at Mitundu Trading Centre in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Chakwera said the initiative aims to provide women and youths with better access to capital to promote economic growth and national development.
The President acknowledged the crucial role local farmers play in supplying Lilongwe’s markets and stated there is a need to boost investment in the area. He promised to construct better roads to facilitate trade and transportation and encouraged people to invest in irrigation farming for increased productivity.

The event also featured speeches from several Malawi Congress Party officials. Party Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda commended the government for constructing staff houses for security officers. MCP Regional Chairperson Zebron Chilondora and local Member of Parliament Binton Kumtsaira urged the people to re-elect President Chakwera in the upcoming September 16th election to continue his developmental initiatives.
Francis Belekanyama, the Member of Parliament for Msinja South Constituency, hailed the government for constructing new classroom blocks, which he said have positively contributed to education outcomes in the area.
