Govt to launch data centre to enhance digital governance

By Chisomo Phiri

The government is set to launch a state-of-the-art data centre to store and manage government information.

Speaking after inspecting the centre’s construction site in Lilongwe on Thursday, Data Manager at the Department of E-government, Paul Kanthambi, highlighted the project’s significance in the nation’s development.

He explained that the data centre aims to enhance access to critical Information Communication and Technology (ICT) infrastructure, promote digital governance, and reduce infrastructure costs.

“By centralizing data storage, the government expects to improve efficiency and transparency,” said Kanthambi.

He noted that the centre will secure data from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), which currently manage their own systems.

On her part,Director of ICT at the Reserve Bank of Malawi(RBM ),Brenda Chingota Muyaya praised the project’s progress, saying it will increase citizens’ access to government services information.

She commended the centre’s features, including generators and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, which will minimize power outages.

Funded by the World Bank under the Digital Malawi Project, the data centre is set to commence operations in June this year.
