Malawi appeals for humanitarian support amid food insecurity

By Rahim Abdul

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has appealed for more humanitarian efforts to support over 5.7 million Malawians facing food insecurity due to adverse weather conditions.

The appeal was made during the handover of 1,830 metric tons of rice from the Chinese government to the Malawi government.

Reverend Moses Chimphepo, Commissioner for DoDMA, thanked the Chinese government for their timely response, noting that this donation will cover over 36,600 households (164,700 people) through a once-off distribution.

However, Chimphepo emphasized that more support is needed to address the growing impacts of climate change.

The donation is part of the Chinese government’s commitment to providing emergency food assistance to African countries in need.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, pledged her government’s continued support to Malawi, highlighting the importance of solidarity in times of global uncertainty.

DoDMA is distributing the rice to food-insecure households in Lilongwe District under the 2024/2025 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme. Chimphepo urged the government and development partners to implement resilience-building interventions, such as irrigation farming, to ensure long-term food security.
