Principal Secretary Mwayiwawo Polepole of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on Malawians to celebrate Africa Day with pride, highlighting its significance in promoting unity and cultural heritage. Speaking at Capital Hill on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s celebrations, Polepole emphasized Malawi’s historical ties to the event, noting that the country’s first president, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, played a key role in the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union.
“As the Warm Heart of Africa, we must celebrate this day uniquely to showcase our culture and solidarity,” Polepole said. The event, to be held at Bingu National Stadium, will feature traditional dances, food, and performances from across the continent, with participation from various diplomatic missions.

Africa Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the continent’s diversity and achievements. Polepole urged attendees to wear traditional or national attire to honor Africa’s rich heritage.
“This is a time for Africans to unite, celebrate our identity, and reflect on our shared future,” he added. The public is encouraged to join the festivities and support local businesses at the event.
