Malawi to observe child labour day in Machinga

Minister of labour Peter Dimba has disclosed that Malawi is this Saturday expected to join the rest of the world in commemoration of the World Day against Child labour.

Addressing the press conference in Lilongwe, Dimba said the day is commemorated on 12th June every year across the globe. However, owing to other prior engagements here in Malawi, the commemoration will take place on Saturday, 21st June, 2025 in Machinga District.

The Minister said the function will take place at Madziamera Primary School in Traditional Authority (TA) Mposa in Machinga District.

According to the Minister , the day will be marked by various activities including awareness raising messages to sensitize the communities about child labour, its negative impact and how it should be addressed.

“The government is taking several initiatives to address child labor in Malawi these include awareness and Sensitization where the ministry is intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate people about the harmful effects of child labor,” he said.

The function will be observed under the theme “Progress is clear, but there’s more to do. Let’s speed up the effort,” indicating an ongoing commitment to reducing the 2 million children currently trapped in child labor.

The minister assured the nation that the Government of President  Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has the welfare of children at heart and will ensure that children are adequately protected from any form of child labour so that they can enjoy their childhood and realize their dreams.
