The Malawi Unity and Peace Commission has commended journalists in the country for their role in promoting peace, justice and national unity through responsible reporting.
Speaking to the media in Blantyre on Friday, the Commission’s Chairperson, Ali Phiri, said the work of journalists remains critical in shaping public opinion and maintaining social stability.
Phiri noted that journalism carries great power, explaining that a single report can either strengthen harmony or fuel division if facts are not thoroughly verified.

He emphasized that ethical and well-researched reporting helps citizens make informed decisions while discouraging misinformation that could threaten peace.
The Commission particularly applauded the media’s conduct during the September 16, 2025 general elections, describing the coverage as professional, balanced, and calm.
According to Phiri, the accurate and responsible dissemination of information during the polls helped Malawians follow the electoral process peacefully, without unnecessary tension or unrest.
He also praised journalists for their approach when covering disputes and conflicts, saying they demonstrated maturity by avoiding bias and giving all parties a fair platform to be heard.
This balanced reporting, Phiri said, has played a key role in ensuring that justice is seen to be done while preventing the escalation of conflicts.
The Commission believes that such professionalism strengthens public trust in the media and contributes to long-term peace and national cohesion.
Phiri therefore urged journalists to continue upholding high ethical standards, stressing that the media remains a vital partner in safeguarding Malawi’s unity and democracy.
