The Mtwalo Culture and Development Association has announced the revival of the Mtwalo Day, a celebration aimed at promoting Ngoni culture and development in Mzimba. The last time the Ngonis celebrated Mtwalo Day was in 1956.
According to Nelson Mkandawire, board chairperson of the Mtwalo Culture and Development Association, the commemoration will be held on June 21, 2025, at Ezondweni, the headquarters of Senior Chief Mtwalo, and will be graced by Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa.

“We want to celebrate our cultural being. People without culture like a tree without roots, you belong nowhere, you cannot show your identity,” Mkandawire said during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Wednesday.
Misheck Yagontha Munthali, chairperson of the Mtwalo Day organizing committee, appealed for donations to support the event, stating that K20 million is needed to make it a success.
“The association needs K20 million to hold the event, and we appeal to well-wishers to donate towards the event,” Munthali said.
Justice Edward Twea, vice board chairperson of the association, highlighted the organization’s efforts to promote development in the area, including enhancing social services, agriculture, food security, and environmental conservation.
“We want the cultural day to be celebrated every year and take audit of what we have achieved,” Twea said, emphasizing the importance of local leadership in promoting development.
The event aims to bring the community together and celebrate their cultural heritage, while also promoting development and progress in the area.
