President Arthur Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of Malawi’s veteran soldiers, announcing plans to revamp the rehabilitation of military camps that house ex-service personnel and their families.
Speaking on Monday during the official launch of the Flag Week of the Poppy Appeal at Page House in Mangochi, Mutharika who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and Patron of the Veterans said his administration will prioritize the provision of proper accommodation and other essential needs for the country’s war veterans.

“This initiative aims to ensure that our brave men and women who served this nation live in dignity. We must remember that our freedom and peace came at the cost of their courage and sacrifice,” said Mutharika.
The president called on Malawians to use Poppy Week as a time for reflection and generosity toward those who served.
“The Poppy Appeal is not just a symbol of remembrance,it is an opportunity for all Malawians to support the welfare of our veterans and the families of fallen heroes,” he said.
As part of his support, Mutharika donated K5 million to assist veteran soldiers through the Veterans and Ex-Service League of Malawi.
In his remarks, the League’s Chairperson, General Henry Odillo (Retired), hailed Mutharika for his consistent advocacy for the welfare of retired soldiers and the families of those who died in service.
Odillo noted that many veterans still struggle with poor housing and limited access to healthcare.
He said this year’s Poppy Week aims to raise over K300 million through nationwide fundraising activities to improve the lives of veterans and their dependents.
“The challenges are many, but with continued support from the government and the public, we can ensure that no veteran is left behind,” Odillo said.
The event marked the start of a national memorial period dedicated to honouring servicemen and women who devoted their lives to defending Malawi’s sovereignty and maintaining peace.
