Nkhotakota District Council Cracks Down on Unscrupulous Businesses

By Shaffie A Mtambo

Nkhotakota District Council is taking a strong stance against businesses operating outside the law, continuing its inspection exercise of shops, service providers, and institutions in the district. The council’s efforts aim to ensure that all businesses have the necessary documentation and that their products meet the required standards.

Yesterday, the council removed expired products from shops and closed down a pharmaceutical shop at Mkaika for operating illegally. The shop was found to be shelving expired medication and employing uncertified personnel. Today, the council has removed over 78 expired bottles of wine with counterfeit Malawi Bureau of Standards stickers.

The exercise is set to continue throughout the district, with the council determined to protect consumers from harmful products. By taking a proactive approach, Nkhotakota District Council is demonstrating its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring public safety.

This latest development is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to promote good governance and accountability. Recently, the council was commended for its revenue collection efforts and its preparedness in submitting its 2024/2025 budget.
