Illovo Sugar Malawi Plc has denied rumors circulating on social media that it has increased sugar prices in the country.
In a brief statement, the sugar manufacturing company says the communication about the sugar price increase under the name of Crispin Sibao is not from their marketing desk and is fake.
The company adds that the only official communication regarding price changes is the official statement on September 30, 2024, signed by its Managing Director.
The Illovo statement reads in part:”We would like to clarify that this message was not issued by any member of Illovo’s Commercial Team. Please disregard the statement.We regret any confusion this may have caused and appreciate your understanding.”

Malawi leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Tuesday met World Bank Management team in Washington DC.
Confirming the meeting via his Facebook page the president said was happy that World Bank was committed to help Malawi improve its macro- economic landscape.

He wrote on his Facebook page ; “The World Bank says it is committed to help Malawi accelerate economic growth and transform livelihoods of its citizens.”
Chakwera has since hailed World Bank team for ensuring that funds collected are used for poor purposes.
Chakwera said “During an interaction with Managing Director for World Bank responsible for operations, Anna Bjerde, at the bank’s headquarters in Washington DC, we agreed on the importance of utilising the bank’s fund for poorer countries, International Development Association (IDA),”
He said among the priority issues was the inclusion of Malawi as one of the 15 pioneering African economies to benefit from an ambitious project designed to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.
He said the World Bank understands that Malawi requires tailor-made interventions to bolster investments in clean energy as a catalyst to sustainable development.
Alliance for Democracy, (AFORD) has strongly condemns inflammatory remarks which their deputy Secretary General Daud Chikwanje made in which he was inciting violence against Malawi Congress Party, (MCP) members urging authorities to take immediate action, promote tolerance as well as unity and non- violence.
In a press statement signed by AFORD President Enock Chihana dated 1st October, 2024, says such hate speeches have no place in democracy and undermines the principles of peaceful coexistence.

“We urge all political leaders to promote tolerance and respect for opposing views and call on the authorities to take swift action against those perpetuating violence,” said AFORD President.
He therefore encouraged people in the country to refrain from violence and priotize unity as the country is heading towards 2025 general elections.
He says AFORD is committed to promote democratic values and protecting the rights of all Malawians.
Senior members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), led by Shadric Namalomba, visited Zomba Prison where party member Daud Chikwanje is currently being held. Chikwanje was arrested on Monday in connection with a message that has been circulating on social media platforms.
The content of the message, which led to his arrest, is alleged to have violated certain regulations, though specific details of the charges remain unclear at this point. Chikwanje’s arrest has sparked concern among DPP supporters, who believe this is part of a broader crackdown on their political activities.

Namalomba, who is a prominent figure within the DPP, expressed his solidarity with Chikwanje during the visit, emphasizing that the party stands firmly behind its members during difficult times. “This is a politically motivated arrest, and we will continue to fight for justice,” Namalomba reportedly stated.
The visit by Namalomba and other DPP officials to Zomba Prison highlights the growing tensions between the opposition party and the current government, with many viewing Chikwanje’s arrest as a tactic to suppress dissent. Party members have vowed to provide legal support to Chikwanje and are mobilizing to protest what they view as unfair treatment.
As the case unfolds, the DPP is expected to increase its calls for transparency and fairness in the legal proceedings, while continuing to challenge what they perceive as politically charged arrests of their members.
