Malawian agricultural workers in Israel participated in the commemorations of Martyrs’ Day by visiting various sites in the old city of Jerusalem.

Leading the tour was Workers for Arava Farmers (WAF), an organization under which several young Malawian men and women are employed on various farms in the country.

According to Justice Kangulu, Managing Director of WAF, the places visited included one of Jerusalem’s most famous churches, Notre Dame in Jerusalem.

Malawian agricultural workers in Israel participated in the commemorations of Martyrs' Day by visiting various sites in the old city of Jerusalem.

Kangulu has told the Media that they deemed it important for Malawians working in Israel to be involved in the Martyrs’ Day celebrations, hence the tour.

He added, “The visit also involved a prayer in the church, followed by a special 360-degree view of both the old and new Jerusalem city.”

Meanwhile, Itai Smolinski, one of the directors of WAF in Israel, said that the organization is currently awaiting the finalization of a government-to-government agreement to facilitate smooth labor exports.

“While we await the finalization of the G2G agreement, we decided to participate in the commemorations that were happening in the northern part of Malawi, which was attended by the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera,” Smolinski added.

The governments of Malawi and Israel are currently in negotiations for a labor export deal, which, once finalized, will enable Malawians to secure jobs in Israel.

As of now, there are over 700 Malawians working in Israel’s agricultural sector

“Customers can compare and select policies tailored to their needs in real time. For example, on motor vehicle insurance, one can compare premium quotations from five of our partner insurers and select the one that better suits their budget,” Msiska said.

The insurance cover can either be under comprehensive or third-party on private or commercial vehicles which customers can conveniently pay using the platform and they can pick their insurance discs at any Centenary Bank branch convenient to them.

Msiska stated that, for funeral insurance, customers can include their family members.

“Besides one registering for him or herself, customers can further select the number of family members to cover and the desired payout amount.

“For example, with a premium of K200, one would benefit a payout of K200,000, and a premium of K1,000 for the maximum coverage of K1,000,000,” he stated.

Msiska said, through the digital insurance services, the Bank aims to improve customer experience and meet the evolving needs of clients through their mobile platform as the streamlined process allows customers to efficiently evaluate and purchase policies completely through the App.

One of the bank’s customers, Caroline Phiri, applauded the Bank for coming up with the digital services saying they would save customers in times of need.

The digital insurance services are also aimed at reducing paper usage thereby making a positive environmental impact.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has called upon Malawians to embrace Martyrs’ Day as a day of gratitude instead of sorrow, saying the death of the martyrs brought freedom to the country and built the nation.

Chakwera said time has come for the wounds of the nation to heal from what happened in 1959, by among other things, ensuring members of the bereaved families receive the necessary compensation.

“Such a death has every reason to be remembered with joy. By dying for our freedom, our forefathers gave us an example of what it takes to be a good citizen. They showed us that a good citizen uses the resources they have to fight for their country,” he said.

Chakwera then rebuked unpatriotic Malawians who he said allow people from other countries to talk down on Malawians, saying our warmth as a nation need not to be taken for granted.

In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, Vuwa Kaunda thanked the President for the humbleness he demonstrates, saying it enables people from opposition parties to feel free to express themselves in national functions.

“This is the fourth time you are honouring us here in Nkhata Bay and we don’t take it for granted.

“I want to use this opportunity to ask you for more police houses here in Nkhata Bay and also for the construction of a hospital at Thotho area which is 20 kilometres from here,” said Kaunda.

In his remarks, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda said the establishment of mega farms in different districts of the country including Nkhata Bay to ensure food security in the country, is a true demonstration of the freedom the Martyr’s died for.

“Freedom is meaningless when there is hunger in the country. We therefore would like to thank the President for the establishment of Mega Farms. What is happening here in Nkhata Bay concerns the whole country.

Another crucial aspect to note is that previously, the bereaved families used to reject political parties at this event as they were inciting violence. However, Tonse Alliance has demonstrated unity as this event has been held peacefully since the President came into office,” said Chimwendo Banda.

Representative of the Bereaved Family, James Thawi said the presence of both the President and Leader of Opposition in Parliament at the event was proof of President Lazarus Chakwera’s servant leadership which seeks to unite all Malawians regardless of political affiliation.

“This is a good thing which demonstrates your servant leadership. I ask you to work together for the betterment of our nation. I also thank you for laying wreaths on the graves of our fallen heroes,” said Thawi.

In his remarks, Senior Chief Nkumbira thanked the President for gracing the occassion, but was quick to call upon the President to come to the aid of Nkhata Bay District Hospital which lacks medication.

A mega farm under Greenbelt Authority (GBA) in Salima District is said to be transforming lives of community members who are benefiting from the initiative through employment.

Speaking during a media tour of the 100 hectare Chikwawa Irrigation Scheme located in the area of Senior Chief Khombedza, one of the beneficiaries, Owen Mwase, described his experience at the scheme as life changing.

Mwase said prior to his employment at the farm as a casual labourer, he used to struggle to make ends meet especially when it came to feeding his family.

“I now own twenty chickens and two goats; as such, buying food for my household is no longer a hurdle. Our area is marred by food insufficiency since our crops did not do well the last farming season,” Mwase said.

He said with wages he realises from the farm,  he now affords to send his children to school with all the necessary provisions such as notebooks and money for school development fund.

Another beneficiary, Kerita Lyson commended the initiative, saying with the K16,100 in wages she receives every Friday, she managed to rent a piece of land and is able to care for her four children.

Group Village Head Mwazawala under Senior Chief Khombedza, in whose area the mega farm is located, expressed gratitude that most of his subjects are employed at the farm.

“I am grateful to government for this development which is of benefit to my area. The establishment of the farm came at a good time as many people in this area have been struggling to make ends meet.

“I have also noted that people working at the farm are organised and are jealously guarding it from ill intended people. The maize is doing well and we are anticipating bumper harvest,” Mwazawala said.

In his remarks, BGA Chief Executive Officer, Eric Chidzungu revealed that the Authority plans to expand the mega farms to scale up more job opportunities and ensure food security in the country.

“We believe in collaborating with communities to give them ownership, hence solely depending on local workers for the success of the farm,” Chidzungu said.

He expressed satisfaction that despite Salima having experienced dry spells in the past two weeks, Chikwawa Scheme is estimated to produce more than 280 metric tonnes of maize this season.

Currently, Chikwawa Irrigation Scheme has employed 140 locals manning the 100-hectare farm in the district.
