Mutharika Runs from His Own Shadow ‘No Rigging Plot’ at Hand

0

By Linda Kwanjana

Former President Arthur Peter Mutharika told the public at Katoto Freedom Park on Saturday afternoon September 21st, 2024 that he is in store of information that alleges that the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is engaged in a clandestine operation to rig next year’s elections through the National Registration Bureau (NRB).

Ironically, Mutharika failed to shade more light on the implementation plan of the so said scheme. A clear indicator that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader is vacuum on the issue.

Mutharika

However, investigations reveal  no any Malawi Congress Party (MCP) possesses such evil plans to manipulate the electoral process as such acts dilute the power of a democratic Malawi.

Mutharika called upon President Chakwera to cease what he termed an “ _alleged plot_ ” asserting that the integrity of elections is paramount within any democratic setting.

A million dollar question is, does Mutharika understand the functionalities of NRB? Legally, NRB is there to operate independently.

Mutharika’s statement sparks unnecessary divisive public debate out of mare allegations. A clear symbol of a promoter of national disunity.

What Mutharika preached in Mzuzu raises eyebrows on credibility of his law credentials and legal accolades.

*NRB Says No Foul Play In The Registration Process*

National Registration Bureau attributes some delays in the identity card registration to machine processes which takes a bit of time to produce identity cards.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland Security Affairs Mphatso Sambo stresses the process takes between 3 and 5  minutes to produce one identity card translating to at least 100 Malawians per day making it not easy for many to be registered in a single day.

“Every Malawian who is eligible to be registered will be registered at an appropriate time as we are working in an open and transparent manner, for us is our mandate to register every Malawian,” Sambo highlighted.

According to the National Statistical Office, (NSO) over 50% of the country’s population are above 18 years of age, which gives an opportunity to the mandated NRB to register huge numbers.

According to report outcomes on the ongoing national mop-up registration, NRB continues to man significantly as 12 million citizens above the age of 16 are all registered across the country.

Malawi for closer partnership and collaboration with UN to achieve SDGs

By Arkangel Tembo, New York, USA

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has acknowledged that there is a strong partnership existing between Malawi and the United Nations (UN) in different areas of development.

President Chakwera made the remarks on Saturday, during a meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York.

He stated that his administration places great importance on the collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Malawi and various UN agencies operating in the country.

Our partnership with the UN touches crucial sectors, including education, health, climate change, poverty eradication, agriculture, and good governance,” Chakwera said.

He commended the UN for being a steadfast partner in providing unwavering support to Malawis challenging and prosperous times.

He also appealed for Malawis additional support in three crucial areas such as elections, social cash transfers for those affected by hunger due to climate change and support for victims of cyclone Freddy through the rehabilitation of infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and facilitating the construction of affordable houses.

The President also expressed appreciation to UN for its advocacy on United Nations reforms, particularly the establishment of two permanent seats in the Security Council.

He then applauded UN for its efforts and dedication in promoting dialogue to seek peaceful resolutions on disputes.

“Malawi, alongside other developing nations, continues to experience the repercussions of the conflicts in Europe and the Gulf, which persist in disturbing the supply chains for various goods and services,” Chakwera said.

The President then hailed UN Malawi for the establishment of the UN Technology Bank for Least Development Countries and recognised its potential to bridge the technological gap and contribute to sustainable development, particularly in developing African countries.

“The successful implementation of the UNIPOD project at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), with support from the United Nations Development Programme is a commendable example of a technological project that could be expanded with the Bank’s support,” he added.

Silver Strikers Cry Foul Over Revised TNM Super League Fixtures

By Twink Jones Gadama

TNM Super League leaders Silver Strikers have expressed outrage over the revised fixtures released by the Super League of Malawi (Sulom), citing significant imbalances in home and away games allocated to various teams.

The Central Bankers, chasing their first title in 11 years, have formally lodged a complaint with Sulom, highlighting potential compromises to the competition’s fairness.

In a strongly worded letter signed by Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba, Silver Strikers contend that the revised schedule, released on September 16, 2024, undermines the principles of fair play and equitable treatment.

The letter states, “A review of the fixture list reveals notable discrepancies in the allocation of home and away games, which may compromise the integrity of the league.”

Chimimba specifically pointed out that second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have been scheduled to play four out of five games at home from September 21 to October 26, while Silver Strikers will have only three out of five home games during the same period.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, meanwhile, are slated to play two out of four games at home.

Furthermore, Chimimba highlighted fixture congestion from October 27 to November 10, which could pose risks to player health and performance.

“This congested fixture list will undoubtedly put undue pressure on our players, potentially leading to injuries and fatigue,” Chimimba noted.

The letter also raised concerns about Bullets’ scheduling, which sees them play six consecutive away games from September 29 to October 30, followed by four out of five home games to conclude the season.

In contrast, Silver Strikers have not been afforded a similar stretch of consecutive home games.

Sulom Chief Executive Officer Faith Mzungu-Vilakati declined to comment on the matter, while Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga stated that they would not engage with the regulator on fixture disputes.

“It’s pointless for us to engage in unending fixture wrangles. We will proceed as it is,” Chigoga said.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi requested more time to comment on the issue.

Silver Strikers, currently top of the table with 45 points from 19 matches, face third-placed Kamuzu Barracks at Silver Stadium tomorrow.

The Central Bankers hold a seven-point lead over Wanderers, making the fixture imbalance allegations particularly contentious.

REACTIONS FROM STAKEHOLDERS

Malawi Football Association (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya described the situation as “unfortunate” and urged Sulom to address the concerns.

“We cannot have a situation where teams feel disadvantaged due to fixture imbalances. Sulom must review and adjust accordingly.”

Former Silver Strikers player and current analyst, Peter Mgangira, echoed Chimimba’s concerns.

“Fixture imbalance can greatly impact team performance. Sulom must ensure fairness and equity in scheduling.”

IMPACT ON THE LEAGUE

The dispute has cast a shadow over the TNM Super League title race, which has reached a boiling point.

With only a few games remaining, the fixture imbalance allegations threaten to undermine the competition’s integrity.

As the situation unfolds, fans and stakeholders eagerly await Sulom’s response to Silver Strikers’ complaints.

Will the governing body revise the fixtures to address the concerns, or will the status quo remain?

FIXTURE IMBALANCE: A RECURRING THEME

This is not the first time fixture imbalance allegations have plagued the TNM Super League.

In 2022, Bullets lodged a similar complaint, citing unfair scheduling.

The recurring theme raises questions about Sulom’s scheduling processes and the need for greater transparency.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Sulom’s response to Silver Strikers’ complaints will be closely watched. Potential outcomes include:
Revised fixtures addressing the alleged imbalances or holding a meeting between Sulom and Silver Strikers to discuss concerns and alternatively no  changes to the existing fixtures.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is certain: the TNM Super League title race will continue to captivate fans, with every match counting in the pursuit of glory.

DPP’s Mary Navicha Vows to Address Economic Woes, Fuel Price Hike Opposition

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) National Women’s Director, Mary Navicha, has pledged to tackle Malawi’s economic challenges, citing the devastating impact of fuel price increases on already burdened citizens ¹. Navicha emphasized that the kwacha’s weakening value has severely affected local traders, particularly women.

“The continuous depreciation of our currency has made it difficult for our women to make ends meet,” Navicha stated. “We cannot sit back and wat the country, stressing the need for urgent solutions. “Food insecurity is a major concern, and we must prioritize sustainable agriculture practices to ensure food availability,” she added.

Navicha

Regarding the recent Chikangawa plane crash and Chikwawa-Nsanje highway incidents, Navicha demanded a comprehensive report be presented to the National Assembly. “We need transparency and accountability in these matters,” she emphasized.

The DPP has consistently opposed fuel price hikes, walking out of the National Assembly in protest against proposed price increases ¹. The party argues that such hikes would exacerbate poverty and inequality.

Navicha’s statements come amid growing concerns over Malawi’s economic stability. The country faces significant challenges, including a struggling agriculture sector and inadequate infrastructure.

Pointless Muthalika Delivered Pointless Speech at Katoto

By Political Contributor

Peter Muthalika’s remarks at Katoto clearly highlight the disconnect between his words and the reality on the ground. It is evident that his close associates are feeding him misinformation just to benefit financially, disregarding his advanced age and health concerns. This raises serious questions about the integrity of his administration and the sincerity of his intentions.

Muthalika’s lack of realism was glaring during his speech, particularly when he chose to criticize the Chakwera-led government for favoritism. However, his own track record reveals inconsistencies and contradictions

For instance, his claim of abolishing the quarter system is contradicted By his administration due to rampant Favouritsm and Tribalism

He  criticized Chakwera for the failure to construct Mbelwa University, despite the fact that his administration funded non-existent lectures and personnel at the fictitious institution known as Mombera.

This inconsistency undermines his credibility and calls into question the validity of his statements.

On a more positive note, Muthalika’s acknowledgment of the successful construction of Mzuzu University Library demonstrates a rare moment of realism.

Despite this, his tendency to exaggerate achievements in the Northern Region remains a cause for concern.

His promises of effective decentralization implementation also lack credibility, given his history of unfulfilled commitments.

In conclusion, Muthalika’s speech at Katoto was not only pointless but also revealed a troubling pattern of misinformation and inconsistency. Leaders need to be truthful and transparent in their communication to earn the trust and respect of the people they serve.
