TNM Super League leaders Silver Strikers have expressed outrage over the revised fixtures released by the Super League of Malawi (Sulom), citing significant imbalances in home and away games allocated to various teams.

The Central Bankers, chasing their first title in 11 years, have formally lodged a complaint with Sulom, highlighting potential compromises to the competition’s fairness.

In a strongly worded letter signed by Chief Executive Officer Patrick Chimimba, Silver Strikers contend that the revised schedule, released on September 16, 2024, undermines the principles of fair play and equitable treatment.

The letter states, “A review of the fixture list reveals notable discrepancies in the allocation of home and away games, which may compromise the integrity of the league.”

Chimimba specifically pointed out that second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have been scheduled to play four out of five games at home from September 21 to October 26, while Silver Strikers will have only three out of five home games during the same period.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, meanwhile, are slated to play two out of four games at home.

Furthermore, Chimimba highlighted fixture congestion from October 27 to November 10, which could pose risks to player health and performance.

“This congested fixture list will undoubtedly put undue pressure on our players, potentially leading to injuries and fatigue,” Chimimba noted.

The letter also raised concerns about Bullets’ scheduling, which sees them play six consecutive away games from September 29 to October 30, followed by four out of five home games to conclude the season.

In contrast, Silver Strikers have not been afforded a similar stretch of consecutive home games.

Sulom Chief Executive Officer Faith Mzungu-Vilakati declined to comment on the matter, while Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga stated that they would not engage with the regulator on fixture disputes.

“It’s pointless for us to engage in unending fixture wrangles. We will proceed as it is,” Chigoga said.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi requested more time to comment on the issue.

Silver Strikers, currently top of the table with 45 points from 19 matches, face third-placed Kamuzu Barracks at Silver Stadium tomorrow.

The Central Bankers hold a seven-point lead over Wanderers, making the fixture imbalance allegations particularly contentious.

REACTIONS FROM STAKEHOLDERS

Malawi Football Association (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya described the situation as “unfortunate” and urged Sulom to address the concerns.

“We cannot have a situation where teams feel disadvantaged due to fixture imbalances. Sulom must review and adjust accordingly.”

Former Silver Strikers player and current analyst, Peter Mgangira, echoed Chimimba’s concerns.

“Fixture imbalance can greatly impact team performance. Sulom must ensure fairness and equity in scheduling.”

The dispute has cast a shadow over the TNM Super League title race, which has reached a boiling point.

With only a few games remaining, the fixture imbalance allegations threaten to undermine the competition’s integrity.

As the situation unfolds, fans and stakeholders eagerly await Sulom’s response to Silver Strikers’ complaints.

Will the governing body revise the fixtures to address the concerns, or will the status quo remain?
