The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has revoked certificates of various food business operators across the country, on issues to do with hygiene and safety.

In a press release, released today, MBS has revoked the certification and suspended operation of Suhanna Continental Bakery (Bread and Buns), Sana Superstore-North End mall, Mzuzu (Bread, Buns, Confectioneries & Meat Handling); Midland Fast Food (Catering Services); Macdeema Cash N’ Carry, Mzuzu (Butchery); Perekezi Enterprises (Honey and Coffee), Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Ltd (Ground Coffee); Emmaculate Lodge, Mzuzu (Catering Services); Our Daily Bread Bakery (Bread & Buns); Chipiku Stores-Game Complex,Lilongwe, (Catering services, Meat Handling, Bread and Buns) and Korea Gardens, Lilongwe (Catering Services), due to non-compliance with relevant Malawi standards

.According to MBS Director General, Dr. Benard Thole, it is their mandate to ensure that Malawians are served with food products that are of quality and good standards hence the suspension of operators that failed to comply to such conditions.

“The aforementioned operators were found operating below the minimum requirements of the Malawi Standard (MS) 21:2002: Food and Food processing units-code of hygiene conditions, exposing the products and or services to significant food risk. In the interest of public health safety and in line with provision of Malawi Bureau of Standards Act (Cap 51:02) sections 34 (1) and 39 (1), the MBS hereby exercises its mandate to withdraw certification and or issue suspension order to these business operators”, he said.

He has therefore advised the general public to refrain from patronising the services (catering and meat handling) and buying or consuming products from these facilities until all the shortfalls are addressed and suspension is lifted.

Republic of Germany through Voluntary Service Overseas Malawi (VSO) under Unlocking Talent (UT) project has handed over digital equipment (tablets) to the Ministry of Education with the aim of discovering and transforming education through education technology.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover ceremony of tablets and iPads for digital learning at Kasiya Primary School in Lilongwe, German Ambassador to Malawi Ute Konig said the Unlocking Talent project has a role to empower children in Malawi to build literacy and numeracy skills needed to achieve their full potential in education.

“The project has helped a lot of primary school learners in Malawi as many learners are now able to learn through technology. We have reached over 170,000 primary school learners to access literacy and numeracy learning through tablets and ipads “. she added.

Konig said the UT E-learning for primary education project was implemented by VSO Malawi in 2019 and has been working with the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the German government funded by the kreditanstalt fur wiederaufbau (KFW) with over 30 billion Malawi kwacha used to make this possible.

In her remarks Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima said the UT project is a demonstration of the Malawi government’s commitment towards digitalization of education system particularly at a foundation level with the aim of accelerating the attainment of learning outcomes among learners in numeracy and literacy.

“Through this project, government alongside the development partners including VSO wanted to prove that indeed the use of technology can accelerate the attainment of learning outcomes especially in primary schools”. Said Wirima.

She added that German government through the UT project has helped the Ministry in delivery of quality and inclusive education in 338 schools from 15 districts in Malawi.

Wirima added that the UT project has also helped government in terms of infrastructure development by constructing 178 learning centers for primary schools blocks in 15 districts in Malawi.

She expressed optimism that by 2029 primary school learners across Malawi will be able to learn using digital equipment.

In his remarks VSO Programme Implementations Lead, Moffat Njati appealed to government to ensure that adequate number of teachers are trained and that the community is involved in the management of the centers.

Unlocking Talent project aims at igniting children’s potential in literacy and numeracy and has the vision of reaching 3.5 million children by 2029.

Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party trashes Chakwera’s SONA

By Vincent Gunde

One of new registered political parties in the country Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) has trashed President Lazarus Chakwera’s State of the Nations Address (SONA) delivered in Parliament on Friday,February 9, 2024.

For the past 60 years of independence, before MRP was born, there has never been an official opposition party inside and outside Parliament response clearly speaking for itself that MRP did not come only to add numbers of political parties but to contribute to the development of the country.

The MRP has observes that the President Chakwera’s SONA is a continuously repeating the same problems he spoke last year without solutions that Malawi is a nation under geopolitical, climatic and fiscal pressures attributing the country’s economic failure to disasters and Russia-Ukraine war.

President and Commander in Chief of MRP Bantu Saunders Jumah has described the speech made by President Chakwera as not addressing Malawians but rather a speech of appeasement to International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank of imperialism and capitalism so that donors know that their Dollars and Euros coming to Malawi are doing something on paper.

Jumah says the speech was absent to Malawians but present to the development partners saying the excuses given for the country’s economic failure, are lame observing that Malawi’s economy is sick and is in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because politicians in government are the ones condoning corruption.

He says for the past three SONA’s Affordable Input Programme (AIP) has failed to register food security in Malawi saying instead of confessing that AIP has failed, President Chakwera said there is an increase of 10 percent this year more than three years ago.

The MRP President says about 4 million people are food insecure and they are in need of maize observing that Malawians are dying of hunger eating grass and poisonous roots while at the same time Malawi’s economy will grow by 3.1 percent this year amid clapping hands by MPs.

He says 60 years of independence is a period of shame for the country like Malawi to celebrate observing that no country can celebrate this when its citizens are in abstract poverty while the economy of Malawi’s neighbors Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique is flourishing.

“60 years of shame with recycled politicians, those coming back to rejoin the MCP are the same people who have been initiating bad policies in the previous governments,”says Jumah.

He observes that Agriculture, Tourism and Mining (ATM) Strategy is nonsense in Malawi claiming that the country was already sold to the highest bidders and there is no space for government saying the bidders were issued with licenses but are not working.

Jumah says as the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) is embarking on commercialization of Agriculture, Malawi Prisons must venture into the same saying prisoners are not animals, they are people like all, they need to have their own food urging government to rebuild Prisons to match with today’s requirements.
On VISA exemption to 79 countries, Jumah said there is no need to have Visa exemptions looking at the country’s infrastructures urging government to engage government to government for special permits to Malawians while it is rebuilding its economy.

On Mombera University, Jumah has accused government of failing to bring to book culprits involved in receiving the people’s taxes observing that there have been issues of Samousa’s at K500 each but to this day four years down the line, no arrests were made describing this as only tarnishing the image of other people for no evidence.

On naming the roads after Gwanda Chakuamba Phiri and Mohammad Sidik Mia, Jumah has urged President Chakwera to mobilize funds before he lives office to do it so that the people of Lower Shire don’t call him a good promiser and liar.

On issues of corruption, Jumah says President Chakwera only talked about achievements of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) but he did not say what his government is doing to address the vice claiming that Malawians are still demanding for clarifications on K30 billion meant for AIP, K153 billion East Bridge Company and many other gates.

Jumah has reminded President Chakwera of hunger devastation in the country observing that the maize which is being distributed for free across the country is being politicized, party members and those that have money to corrupting officials in the registration of beneficiaries are the ones benefiting.

He has finally registered his complaint to Parliament on the chairs which still wears blue colours for a political party calling for the need to change the chairs to wear national colours of Black, Red and Green to prove to all that Parliament is a state property.

By Chisomo Phiri

On Saturday, February 3, 2024, the Science for All (SCI4O) Initiative successfully held a Career Guidance Day at the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Programme (MLW) premises in Blantyre.

The Career Guidance Day is a day which SCI4O plans to be organising every year for students that have sat for Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) exams or International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCE) exams and are from schools where SCI4O initiative clubs were established so as they acquire much-needed information on discovering their strengths, developing awareness and qualification standards for programmes and careers in clinical as well as biomedical science.

Speaking in an interview with this publication, SCI4O Coordinator Oris Chimphambano said the primary aim of the event is to encourage the aforementioned students to enroll into the Clinical and Biomedical science programmes so that they appreciate the careers of these two science programmes of study.

He said:”We want to train a generation of future scientists and there is no better way of doing that than having such events where we are guiding our future leaders.”

Chimphambano said the event was attended by three guest speakers;Dr. Alice Mbewe, a Translational Science Champion, Gareth Lipungula, a Study Physician and Aaron Chirambo,a PhD fellow.

He said these three guest speakers were chosen because they are industry leaders and researchers in the fields of biomedical and clinical science.

He went on to challenge students that have just completed MSCE or IGCE and are waiting for the results not to look down themselves but rather enroll in science programmes at tertiary level.

He said:”Science is for everyone, and it shapes our future. Clinical and biomedical sciences offer endless possibilities to make a difference in people’s lives. Whether you’re passionate about finding cures, improving healthcare, or exploring the mysteries of life, there is a place for you in this exciting field. Science for all is also here to stay and it is an ongoing project. As such, we are open to establishing strategic partnerships with any organisation in this country and beyond as long as our goal of encouraging students to take up careers in clinical and biomedical science and their goals align.”

On the future plans, Chimphambano said:”
We have a lot of future plans such as strengthening partnerships, promoting innovation and research, enhancing our outreach efforts as well as promoting diversity and inclusion in the field of science. We are planning on making all this realised through a number of our activities such as the 2nd Marcfarlane Mbewe Quiz (which will be national).Establishing more science clubs in schools across the country, and presenting our work on international platforms such as the Falling Walls Science summit in Berlin, among other activities.”

He then emphasized the importance of collective action in driving meaningful change towards everything.

“Each of us has a role to play in fostering interest and participation in clinical and biomedical sciences. Whether it is through mentoring aspiring students, advocating for increased resources and support in science, or simply spreading awareness about the opportunities within the field, every contribution matters. Together, we can create a brighter future where science is for everyone,”he said.

The Career Guidance Day was spiced up by a number of activities such as presentations on the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) application system, presentations on clinical and biomedical science programmes, mentorship assessment, just to mention some.
