Ghana’s Defence and Environment Ministers Killed in Helicopter Crash

Ghana is mourning the loss of two senior government officials, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science, and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who were among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash earlier today. The tragic incident occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, where the aircraft burst into flames upon impact, leaving no survivors . 

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that a Z9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, lost radar contact shortly after takeoff from Accra at 9:12 AM local time. The flight was en route to Obuasi, a mining town, where the officials were scheduled to attend an anti-illegal mining program . Eyewitnesses reported seeing the aircraft engulfed in flames after crashing into a tree, with the wreckage burning beyond recognition . 



In addition to the two ministers, the deceased include: 
– Dr. Muniru Mohammed Limuna– Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator 
– Samuel Sarpong– Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) 
– Samuel Aboagye– Former parliamentary candidate and NADMO Deputy Director-General 
– Three Air Force personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah . 

President John Mahama’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, described the crash as a “national tragedy” and announced that flags would fly at half-mast indefinitely as a mark of respect . The government extended condolences to the families of the victims, praising their service to the nation . 

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with preliminary reports suggesting poor weather conditions as a possible factor . The Ghana Armed Forces and emergency teams are working to recover the remains and analyze flight data . 

Dube launches manifesto,vows to transform key sectors

Nationalist Patriotic Party (NPP) President Daniel Dube on Tuesday launched the party’s manifesto in the capital Lilongwe, pledging sweeping reforms in the country’s agriculture, economy, public service, and healthcare sectors while committing to lead a corruption-free government.

In his address,Dube criticized the current Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP), describing it as a vehicle for siphoning public funds.

He pledged that, if elected, his administration would abolish the programme and introduce Agricultural Output Programmes instead designed to provide farmers with access to affordable loans for inputs.

To empower rural communities, the NPP leader said he plans to establish a community development bank, develop a commodities market for smallholder farmers, and scale up fish pond farming to build a robust fish industry.

Economically,he promised to restore macroeconomic stability by implementing a currency board system to stabilize the Kwacha, enforcing fiscal discipline in state-owned enterprises, and promoting indigenous entrepreneurship all while adopting a zero-tolerance policy on corruption.

In the health sector,Dube outlined plans to construct a clinic in every constituency, establish drug manufacturing factories, and introduce mobile clinics and telehealth services to improve access to quality healthcare across the country.

Malawi is set to hold tripartite elections on September 16 this year.

Haiya defends Chiwalo’s appointment as new FAM GS

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya has described newly appointed General Secretary Abu Chiwalo as a professional bringing a wealth of experience in financial management, operations, and governance.

Chiwalo’s appointment has sparked mixed reactions among football stakeholders and administrators saying he lacks experience to hold the new position.

But in an interview with 247 Malawi News,Haiya  said Chiwalo’s appointment is backed by over 15 years of service across the public, private, and development sectors.

“As a Chartered Accountant, Auditor, and seasoned consultant with international exposure, he is expected to enhance FAM’s financial integrity, operational efficiency, and donor engagement,” said Haiya.

The FAM president also revealed that Chiwalo was part of the team that developed the association’s current strategic plan, giving him valuable insight into FAM’s priorities and objectives.

Chiwalo replaces Alfred Gunda on the GS position whose term expired a few weeks ago.

M & B Company donates K1.5 million to support Salima Central East Education Division team

M & B Company, the producer of Tamu Tamu Energy Health Ginger Drink, on Tuesday donated K1.5 million to support the Salima Central East Education Division football team ahead of the upcoming National Competition.

Speaking to journalists after the sponsorship announcement, M & B Company Manager Macxity Makhuwira said the gesture is part of the company’s continued commitment to promoting football in the country.



He said M & B Company also sponsors a football league within the district.

“Football development begins at the grassroots level. That is why we are committed to supporting the sport locally, regionally, and nationally,” said Makhuwira.

On his part,District Youth Officer Shalom Kumwembe hailed the donation, describing it as a powerful motivator for both young people and their guardians.

He said the support sends a strong message that the sports industry can be a viable pathway for economic growth.

Afana Ceez clarifies message behind viral song ‘Sikoyamba’

Amapiano star Afana Ceez has cleared the growing misconceptions surrounding the message of his popular track ‘Sikoyamba’.

In an interview with 247 Malawi News,the ‘Joker’ hitmaker clarified that the song is not meant to promote reckless spending, but rather encourages listeners to enjoy life while understanding that financial hardships are temporary and better days lie ahead.

The artist explained that the song is based on a conversation between two friends discussing money and the ups and downs that come with it.

His clarification follows a wave of social media reactions, where some fans have interpreting the song as a call to spend freely.

‘Sikoyamba’ has been gaining traction for both its catchy rhythm and creative music video, which features symbolic visuals including a crown and children.
