In a surprising political development, Imran Mtenje, the former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader for the Eastern Region and recently appointed advisor to the party president, has resigned from his position and quit the party entirely.

According to sources close to the matter, Mtenje is set to be officially welcomed into the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) today during an event in Area 24, Lilongwe. The event will be presided over by President Lazarus Chakwera, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.

The defection of Mtenje to the MCP has sent ripples through the DPP, as he was seen as a key figure in the party’s leadership structure. His resignation comes at a time when the DPP is facing internal struggles and factional divisions, which have led to high-profile exits.

Adding to the political intrigue, it is also rumored that former DPP Secretary General Grezedar Jeffrey, who was recently expelled from the party along with Kondwani Nankhumwa, will also be officially welcomed into the MCP at the same event. Jeffrey has been a prominent figure within the DPP for years, and her defection would be a major blow to the party’s efforts to consolidate power ahead of the 2025 elections.

The defections highlight the ongoing struggles within the DPP and signal a potential realignment of Malawi’s political scene as the MCP strengthens its position. With the 2025 elections looming, these shifts could play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future leadership.

As political observers watch closely, today’s developments may set the stage for further changes in Malawi’s political alliances and power structures.

In a dramatic turn of events, a man narrowly escaped an angry mob in Kawale, Lilongwe, after being caught stealing clothes from a fence in a residential area. The police, who swiftly intervened, identified the suspect as Drunken Kapyepye, a 23-year-old local resident.

According to Kawale police spokesperson Precious Mabvuto Phiri, Kapyepye was caught in the act of stealing clothes that had been left to dry on a fence in one of the houses in the area. When residents realized what was happening, they were quick to raise the alarm, and a crowd soon gathered, furious at the attempted theft.

The mob’s anger escalated quickly, and they were reportedly preparing to set the man on fire as punishment for his actions. Fortunately, the police arrived at the scene just in time to save Kapyepye from the mob’s wrath.

“He was lucky to escape unharmed,” said Phiri. “We urge members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. We understand that people are frustrated with criminal activities, but mob justice is not the answer.”

Kapyepye has since been taken into police custody and is expected to face charges of theft. The police are continuing their investigations and have urged residents to remain calm and report any criminal activities to the authorities rather than resorting to violence.

This incident highlights the growing tension in some areas of Lilongwe, where communities are increasingly frustrated by rising crime rates. However, the police have stressed the importance of allowing the justice system to handle such matters to avoid dangerous situations escalating further.
