Kondwani Nankhumwa has emerged as the leader of the People’s Development Party (PDP) after securing the position unopposed during the party’s 2024 convention held in Blantyre. The convention aimed to elect members to various leadership roles, though most positions went uncontested.
Out of 30 available positions on the party’s central committee, only eight saw competition. Despite this, the convention marked a significant moment for the PDP, with Nankhumwa emphasizing the party’s focus on improving the lives of women and youth as a core part of its mission moving forward.
In his opening remarks, Nankhumwa expressed his confidence in the PDP’s chances in the 2025 general elections, stating, “I believe we will take over the government next year.” He highlighted the party’s commitment to development and progressive policies that prioritize vulnerable groups, particularly women and young people.
Bessie Chirambo, the chairperson of the PDP convention, shared her excitement at the leadership’s decision to promote women’s empowerment within the party, starting with her own appointment as convention chair. Chirambo’s role underscores the PDP’s broader efforts to integrate women into key leadership roles, a move she praised as vital for the party’s future.
As the PDP positions itself for the upcoming elections, Nankhumwa’s leadership, alongside a strong commitment to inclusive development, signals the party’s ambitions to play a significant role in shaping Malawi’s political landscape in the years ahead.
