AFORD National Convention: Brian Banda’s Interviews Reveal Political Dynamics and Musical Announcements

By Burnett Munthali

At the Golden Peacock in Lilongwe on Friday, September 13, the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is holding its national convention, drawing significant political attention and media coverage. Brian Banda, a prominent journalist, conducted a series of interviews with delegates, revealing intriguing political and cultural insights.

During one notable interview, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) articulated a vision of political unity, stating, “When we meet UDF, AFORD, or UTM members, we will consider them as sisters of one family.” This remark illustrated a cooperative stance among some parties, suggesting a collaborative approach to politics.

However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when Banda probed whether the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) would also be considered a “sister” in this context. The DPP delegate seemed momentarily flustered, citing a need to clear her throat as an excuse. Despite this, she did not offer any further comment on MCP, leaving her position on the matter ambiguous.

In a surprising twist, the interview also highlighted a cultural development: the Sendeza Sisters are gearing up for the 2025 presidential election with a fresh musical approach. The delegate confirmed that the Sendeza Sisters are prepared to introduce new vibes through their music, with songs already recorded and set for release. This announcement suggests that music will play a role in the political landscape leading up to the next election.

The interviews at AFORD’s convention provided a glimpse into the intricate web of political alliances and cultural influences shaping Malawi’s current political climate. As the country looks toward the 2025 elections, these interactions underscore both the challenges and innovations within Malawi’s political and cultural spheres.

Malawi State President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has completed a tour of duty, which he commerced soon after his arrival from China.

Speaking to journalists at Mbewe Headquarters in Chikwawa Home of Paramount Chief Lundu,  where he went to pay a courtesy call, Chakwera described the Lowershire tour as successful.

The president said he has been able to witnes progress in the development activities taking place in the region.

Chakwera hailed people in the region for the worm welcome, which they accorded to the first couple.

Chakwera was happy with the overwhelming response, having visited various developmental projects.

“But I think the highlight has been the fact that for the first time in over four decades, we received fuel through the Beira Corridor, and that is a significant milestone in terms of our developmental agenda, because we want more jobs, creation of wealth, as well as food security, these things cannot happen without the enablement of such things like we have in energy and fuel that fuels that productivity,” he said.

The president said apart from receiving the fuel , he was also able to visit a number of other projects, some completed, others on the way to completion by the end of the year, particularly the major irrigation project, the Shire Valley  Transformation program.

He said if the infrastructure is indeed done by this year, then next year, production can start.

The president said he is committed to production.

He said this valley will never be the same and will impact Malawi to become a productive society, not just a consumptive one.

While in Lowershire , the president ordered Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) to re- open all its depots and flood them with maize so that people, especially elders and children do not die with hunger.

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has described the creative and cultural industry as a readily available stepping stone towards achieving Malawi agenda 2063.

President Chakwera said this at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre when he hosted the cultural and creative industry leaders in the country.

“There is need for the industry to partner with the government in organizing the sector for
maximum impact, wider reach, and commercial leverage,” he said.

He said the Malawi 2063 vision of inclusive wealth cannot be
achieved while leaving artists and creatives behind.

“So I fully endorse your submissions for us to do more to build the capacity of our artists in their quest to make a living from their trade,” he said.

During the interface , President Chakwera commended the leaders, saying the interface reminded him of his old days.

He said that it is sad that much of the creative work that Malawians do remains unaccounted for, uncelebrated, uncompensated, and unsung.

During the interface, the artists commended President Chakwera for the passion, zeal, and vision towards uplifting the creative industry.

Music Union of Malawi (MUM) President Vita Chirwa commended the state president Government for the passing of the national arts and heritage council bill into law, saying once the law is fully operationalised it will help to promote the industry.

United Transformation Movement (UTM) Director of Youth, Penjani ‘Fredokiss’ Kalua, has condemned the political violence that took place in Lower Shire yesterday.

The region witnessed a political boiling point, where President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy was stoned while he was on official duties.

Fredo

Kalua has urged Malawians to channel their anger and frustration towards constructive ideas to build the country.

He prophesied that the violence shown towards Chakwera is a stark reminder of what is to come as the country heads towards elections in 2025.

“Our vote is our gun. Our vote is our stone. Our vote is our dagger.I call upon the youth from all political parties to view peace as a non-negotiable virtue, a divine gift from the Most High,” said Kalua.

He emphasized that, as a movement, the party stands for peace and non-violence.
