DPP’s Desperate Attempts to Undermine the Legitimacy of the MCP-led Government exposed

By Linda Kwanjana

On June 28, 2020, Malawi’s Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, the leader of the then opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the winner of the presidential election re-run with 58.57% of the vote. The victory followed a Constitutional Court ruling that had annulled the May 2019 presidential election, which had declared the then-incumbent Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) the winner.

The DPP’s Refusal to Accept Defeat and the Consequences

Since the MCP and Chakwera attained power, the DPP particularly its leader, Peter Mutharika, has never accepted defeat. This refusal to recognize the legitimate winner of the election has had far-reaching embarrassing consequences for Mutharika and Malawi suffered negative gains on political harmony which is one of catalysts of economic development for a country.

Mutharika’s unwillingness to accept the electoral outcome has led the party to resort to desperate measures in an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the MCP-led government. Recently, Mutharika’s profile agents led by Blantyre City South constituency MP, Sameer Suleman, have openly embarrassed themselves with condemnable outbursts which have not found public favour, forcing them to retreat to caves.

In 2022, the DPP openly supported some civil society groups in organizing demonstrations against the government, calling on all party structures and supporters to participate and even requesting the government to provide necessary support, including security, to the protesters. Unfortunately, the calls failed to materialize, further highlighting the unwillingness on the part of the public to be used for political selfish gains emanating from a bitter presidential candidate who is failing to reconcile with his loss.

This tactic of sponsoring civil society groups to cause unrest is a clear attempt by the DPP to destabilize the country and discredit the MCP-led administration. However, these efforts have so far proven futile, as the government has remained steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and democratic principles.

Furthermore, the DPP and Mutharika have been actively peddling false narratives, accusing the MCP-led government of failure, despite the fact that amidst the current economic challenges facing Malawi which are largely global in nature, the government is delivering on flagship development projects that are a testament to not only a focused, but also a prudent leadership.

The strategy of spreading disinformation and scapegoating the government is a desperate attempt by Mutharika to sway undecided voters and regain political power, rather than offering constructive solutions to the nation’s pressing issues. While there is nothing wrong with anyone at all aspiring to get power, what is totally unacceptable is for a tried failure of Mutharika calibre who inflicted multiple folds of miseries on Malawians, to assume that Malawians have forgotten and deleted his callous misdeeds.

Mutharika’s refusal to accept defeat and his subsequent efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the MCP-led government has had a detrimental impact on Malawi’s political progress which could have been one of harmony and transformed inter-party relations. Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue and working towards the betterment of the country, the DPP has chosen to prioritize its own political interests over the welfare of the Malawian people.

As Malawi continues to navigate the global economic challenges, it is crucial that the country’s political actors put aside their differences and work together to address the pressing issues facing the nation. The MCP-led government must remain steadfast in its commitment to democratic principles and continue to provide effective leadership, while the DPP must accept the will of the people and constructively contribute to the nation’s development.

Only through a unified, collaborative approach can Malawi overcome the current challenges and pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.

Clueless and visionless: Malawi National Football Team’s disappointing performance against Burundi

The Malawi National Football Team delivered a performance that can be summed up as “clueless and visionless” in their 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Burundi. The match, held at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe yesterday, exposed significant weaknesses in Malawi’s approach and strategy.

From the opening whistle, it was evident that Malawi struggled to assert any clear game plan. The team’s movements on the field lacked coordination, and there was a noticeable absence of effective communication among the players. The midfield, in particular, appeared disjointed, failing to create meaningful opportunities or disrupt Burundi’s rhythm.

The flames

Burundi capitalized on Malawi’s disarray with a well-organized approach, taking control of the game and exploiting the gaps in Malawi’s defense. Their disciplined strategy and precise execution resulted in a decisive victory, leaving the Malawian supporters frustrated and disheartened.

Malawi’s tactical shortcomings were evident as the team frequently lost possession and struggled to build attacks. The lack of vision and creativity meant that the players often resorted to long, aimless passes rather than attempting to break down Burundi’s defense through coordinated play.

The lackluster performance has raised concerns about the current state of the national team and its preparation for future qualifiers. Analysts and fans alike are calling for a reevaluation of both the coaching strategy and the player selections to address the evident gaps in performance and to restore confidence in the team.

As Malawi looks ahead to their upcoming fixtures, there is a pressing need for a strategic overhaul. The team must reassess their approach, enhance their tactical discipline, and foster better synergy among players if they hope to turn their fortunes around in the competitive AFCON qualifiers.

Increased arrests of Malawians and foreign nationals in South African Police Raids

By Burnett Munthali

In recent months, South African authorities have intensified their efforts to crack down on undocumented immigrants, resulting in a significant rise in arrests of Malawians and nationals from other countries residing in South Africa without proper documentation. The arrests have predominantly taken place in public spaces, such as markets, where many undocumented immigrants engage in informal trading or seek employment.

The individuals arrested include a considerable number of women, who often find themselves targeted during police sweeps in busy commercial areas. These women, many of whom travel to South Africa in search of better economic opportunities, end up working in informal sectors, such as market trading or domestic work. Unfortunately, lacking legal immigration documents makes them vulnerable to arrest and deportation.

The police raids have sparked concern among Malawians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, as they face growing pressure from both local authorities and segments of the South African population that are frustrated with the country’s economic challenges. Xenophobic sentiments have occasionally flared up, with some locals blaming immigrants for high unemployment rates and strained public services.

Various human rights organizations have raised concerns about the conditions under which these arrests are made. Many of those detained are held in overcrowded facilities, and there have been reports of inadequate access to legal representation. Advocacy groups have called on the South African government to ensure that the rights of all detainees, regardless of their immigration status, are respected.

Additionally, the mass arrests have placed further strain on already stretched legal and immigration systems, leading to delays in processing deportations and legal appeals.

For Malawians in particular, the journey to South Africa is often seen as a path to financial stability. The lack of job opportunities in Malawi has driven many to seek work in South Africa, where they believe they can support their families back home. However, without the proper documentation, they risk not only arrest but also exploitation by employers who take advantage of their precarious legal status.

Despite the risks, the allure of economic opportunity continues to draw many Malawians to South Africa. Some attempt to regularize their stay through work permits or asylum applications, but these processes are often lengthy and fraught with bureaucratic hurdles.

The Malawian government has expressed concern over the increasing number of its citizens being arrested in South Africa. Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged its nationals in South Africa to ensure they have the correct documentation and has provided consular support to those detained. The government is also engaging with South African authorities to ensure fair treatment for Malawians and to explore ways to address the root causes of migration.

On the other hand, South Africa’s government maintains that the arrests are part of efforts to uphold its immigration laws and ensure that individuals residing in the country do so legally. They have, however, reiterated their commitment to protecting the rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

In conclusion , as the situation unfolds, it remains clear that the issue of undocumented immigration in South Africa is complex, involving economic, social, and legal dimensions. For Malawians and other foreign nationals, the challenge of living and working in South Africa without proper documentation continues to be a source of vulnerability. Meanwhile, both the Malawian and South African governments are grappling with finding solutions that balance law enforcement with the protection of human rights.

Ombudsman investigates Police transfer controversy

The Office of the Ombudsman has addressed a complaint regarding the sudden transfer of Sergeant Cassim Manda from the Lingadzi Police Station. According to the complaint, Sergeant Manda was reassigned to Fort Maguire in Mangochi without a formal transfer letter, which has raised suspicions of political motivations behind the move.

The Ombudsman, Grace Malera, has confirmed that the office is investigating the matter and has requested a response from the police. Malera has given the police until September 6 to address the concerns raised by Sergeant Manda. The officer’s transfer is being scrutinized to determine if it was influenced by political factors.

Before his transfer, Sergeant Manda reportedly sought refuge at another police station in the country, raising concerns for his safety and the fairness of the process. The police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya, has stated that the police will provide a formal response once the matter reaches the police chief’s office.

This investigation highlights ongoing issues within the police force concerning the transparency and fairness of personnel decisions. The outcome of this inquiry will be closely watched for its implications on police governance and accountability.
